Strengths and limitations
Cal.com
Strengths
- The free tier is unusually complete: unlimited bookings and event types, payments, and two-way CRM sync at no cost, which is a better deal than most competitors' entry paid plans.
- Genuine open source with a self-hosting path, which satisfies security reviews and gives a technical team an escape hatch that closed competitors cannot offer.
- Atoms and API v2 make Cal.com the only mainstream scheduling tool that plausibly doubles as infrastructure inside someone else's product.
- Routing forms plus round-robin at $12 per user per month is aggressive pricing for the inbound-lead-distribution job that mid-market rivals gate much higher.
Limitations
- The open-source promise is narrower than it sounds; the public community edition strips the enterprise features and its own documentation calls it unsuitable for production, so self-hosting is not a free replacement for the paid plans.
- Round-robin, routing forms, analytics, and branding removal all require the Teams plan, so even a two-person startup pays per seat for basics that TidyCal or zcal hand over cheaply.
- The product ships quickly and covers a lot of ground, which shows up as occasional inconsistency between newer surfaces (routing, AI, insights) and the mature core booking flow.
- Cal.ai is priced per minute with no included credits on individual plans, which makes it easy to run up a bill that has nothing to do with the seat count you budgeted.

Cal.com is the best free scheduling tier available in 2026 and one of the cheapest paid entry points, at $12 per user per month for round-robin and routing that competitors charge substantially more for. The open-source angle is real but should not be priced as a discount: the community edition deliberately excludes the team features, so a startup evaluating Cal.com is evaluating the hosted product like any other SaaS. Where it becomes genuinely cheap is the single-founder case, where the answer is zero dollars indefinitely, and the embedded-scheduling case, where Atoms replace an engineering project rather than a subscription.

Motion is expensive as a scheduling tool and reasonable as a work platform, so the value question is entirely about what you replace. If it displaces a project tool, a meeting notetaker, a docs tool, and a booking link, then $19 per seat is competitive against paying for four subscriptions. If it displaces only a booking link, you are paying roughly three times zcal and infinitely more than Cal.com's free tier for a scheduler that faces inward rather than outward. The credit meter adds a second variable that a seat-count budget will miss, and the 33% annual-versus-monthly gap means anyone unwilling to commit for a year pays $29 or $49 rather than the advertised price.

Cal.com
MomentumCal.com is the default recommendation for a startup that needs scheduling and does not want to think about it: the free tier is the most complete in the category, the paid team tier is genuinely cheap for round-robin and routing, and the Calendly importer removes the usual excuse for staying put. Be clear-eyed about the open-source halo, though; the community edition exists to be inspected and tinkered with, not to replace the subscription, and anyone planning to self-host their way out of paying for team features will be disappointed. Buy it for the price and the API, not the license.
