ReferralCandy vs UpPromote
An independent, review-free comparison compiled by the SaaSTracker editorial team. Both products are profiled in full, and neither can pay for placement here.
The short answer
Both sides assessedReferralCandy compared with UpPromote
UpPromote runs both affiliate and customer referral programs in one Shopify app for $29.99 to $199.99 plus 1% to 2% of all referral sales forever. ReferralCandy does only customer referrals but does them with more polish, more reward types, and a fee capped at a new customer's first three orders. If you need both jobs and are on Shopify, UpPromote saves you a subscription. If customer referral is the whole point, ReferralCandy is the better-built product and often the cheaper one over a customer's lifetime.
UpPromote compared with ReferralCandy
ReferralCandy is purpose-built customer referral software and does that one job with more polish, including a success fee that only applies to a new customer's first three orders. UpPromote covers customer referral as one program type alongside a full affiliate platform. A store that only wants customer referrals should compare ReferralCandy's fee structure carefully; a store that wants both jobs handled should take UpPromote and avoid running two subscriptions.
Choose ReferralCandy if
Ecommerce brands with genuinely happy customers and decent repeat purchase rates that want a referral program running with no ongoing management, particularly stores that would rather pay a bounded fee per new customer than a permanent percentage of all referred revenue.
Choose UpPromote if
Shopify stores that want one app covering both an affiliate program and a customer referral program, particularly brands that need coupon-driven creator partnerships, lifetime customer attribution, and automatic payouts without assembling batches by hand.

| Best for | Ecommerce brands with genuinely happy customers and decent repeat purchase rates that want a referral program running with no ongoing management, particularly stores that would rather pay a bounded fee per new customer than a permanent percentage of all referred revenue. | Shopify stores that want one app covering both an affiliate program and a customer referral program, particularly brands that need coupon-driven creator partnerships, lifetime customer attribution, and automatic payouts without assembling batches by hand. |
| Setup time | Under an hour on Shopify, BigCommerce, or WooCommerce thanks to one-click installs. Custom and headless stores using the API path take an engineer a day or two. Designing the reward structure and writing the email copy is the part that deserves real thought. | Under an hour. Install from the Shopify App Store, grant permissions, set a commission rate, customize the registration page, and the program is live. Custom domain setup on Professional adds a DNS step. |
| Learning curve | Low. There are far fewer moving parts than in an affiliate platform because there is no partner recruitment, no commission negotiation, and no payout batching to manage. The main decision is what to offer the referrer and the friend. | Low for the basics, moderate once you get into multi-level structures, auto-tier rules, and the interaction between the four attribution paths. Connected-customer tracking in particular is worth understanding properly before you promise anyone lifetime commissions. |

Strengths and limitations
ReferralCandy
Strengths
- The success fee is capped at each new customer's first three orders, which is the fairest percentage structure in this category and means loyal referred customers eventually cost nothing.
- Genuinely hands-off: referral links issue automatically per order, the email sequence runs itself, and rewards are delivered on a monthly schedule with no manual batch.
- Six reward types including store credit and gift cards, with different rewards for the referrer and the friend, which is the structure that actually converts.
- One-click installs on Shopify, BigCommerce, and WooCommerce plus an API path for custom and headless stores, so it is not locked to a single platform.
Limitations
- The Basic plan's 10.5% fee is close to punitive and stops being the cheapest option above roughly $570 of monthly referral revenue, which is a trap for buyers who choose on headline price.
- It does only customer referrals. There is no affiliate program capability, no partner portal, and no commission negotiation, so a brand that wants both jobs needs a second tool or a product like UpPromote.
- The 7-day trial is short for a program whose results depend on customers organically sharing over weeks.
- It is order-shaped ecommerce software with no subscription lifecycle model, so SaaS businesses billing through Stripe get nothing useful from it.
UpPromote
Strengths
- Covers both affiliate programs and customer referral programs in one app, which almost nothing else in this category does properly.
- Four attribution paths including connected-customer tracking, which makes lifetime commissions work without depending on a cookie surviving.
- Automatic PayPal and store credit payouts, so the monthly payout chore genuinely disappears rather than becoming a batch file you still have to run.
- Anti-leak discount protection and Google Ads monitoring address two forms of affiliate margin erosion that most competitors ignore entirely.
Limitations
- Shopify-exclusive, with no path for WooCommerce, BigCommerce, or standalone sites, which rules it out for a large share of the market.
- The performance fee is the dominant cost once a program works: over $1,000 a month at $100,000 of referral revenue even on the cheapest-fee tier.
- Tier crossovers arrive early and are not signposted, so it is easy to sit on Growth paying more than you would on Professional without noticing.
- Tax and invoice management is not the full US compliance package; there is no W-9 collection with 1099 filing of the kind LeadDyno and Tolt offer.
Pricing compared
ReferralCandy
Monthly subscription plus a success fee on referred purchase subtotals, where higher tiers buy the percentage down. The fee applies only to net-new customers and only to each new customer's first three orders.
- Basic$39
- Grow$79
- Scale$249
- Enterprise$799
Model the fee at your volume and then check you are on the right tier, because the difference between the best and worst choice is enormous. At $10,000 of monthly referral revenue, Basic costs $1,089, Grow costs $429, Scale costs $399, and Enterprise costs $824. At $100,000, Basic costs $10,539, Grow costs $3,579, Scale costs $1,749, and Enterprise costs $1,049. Choosing correctly at $100,000 saves you nearly $9,500 a month against choosing the cheapest headline price. On the right tier ReferralCandy is competitive with UpPromote's $1,199.99 at the same volume and considerably better than Refersion's $2,199, and the first-three-orders cap means the true cost falls further as referred customers become repeat buyers. It will never beat GoAffPro's $49, but GoAffPro does not do this job.
UpPromote
Monthly subscription plus a performance fee on approved referral sales, where higher tiers buy the percentage down from 2% to 1%. A free plan covers stores under $3,000 of monthly referral revenue with no fee.
- Free$0
- Growth$29.99
- Professional$89.99
- Enterprise$199.99
Run the crossovers before choosing a tier, because the fee is the real price. At $10,000 of monthly referral revenue, Growth costs $29.99 plus $200, so $229.99, while Professional costs $89.99 plus $150, so $239.99. Growth wins there, just. At $100,000 a month, Growth is $2,029.99, Professional is $1,589.99, and Enterprise is $1,199.99, so Enterprise wins comfortably. That $1,199.99 is real money for a job GoAffPro does for $49 and Post Affiliate Pro does for $139. UpPromote is cheaper than Refersion at every volume and much better featured than the free alternatives, so it sits in a defensible middle: you are paying roughly 1% of referral revenue for a marketplace, four attribution methods, automatic payouts, anti-leak protection, and Google Ads monitoring. That is a fair trade for a growing brand and a poor one for a mature program that has already solved recruitment.
Editorial verdict on each
ReferralCandy
ReferralCandy does one job and does it with sixteen years of accumulated care. The automation is genuinely hands-off, the reward options are the broadest here, and the success fee capped at a new customer's first three orders is the most honest percentage model in this category, because it stops charging you for customers who stay. The two things that will cost you money are choosing the wrong tier, where Basic's 10.5% is a trap that stops making sense above about $570 a month, and expecting the software to manufacture enthusiasm your customers do not have. If you sell physical goods, your buyers actually like you, and you want referrals running without anyone managing them, this is the right purchase. If you want recruited affiliate partners, this is not the product and no amount of configuration will make it one.

UpPromote is the best all-round Shopify affiliate app, and the price of that is a performance fee that never stops. Four attribution methods, connected-customer lifetime tracking, automatic payouts, a marketplace, anti-leak coupon protection, and Google Ads monitoring add up to a product that is meaningfully better than the free alternatives, and it undercuts Refersion at every volume while doing more. It also handles customer referral programs, which means one app instead of two. The reservations are Shopify exclusivity, which decides the question for anyone else, and the arithmetic at scale: $1,199.99 a month at $100,000 of referral revenue is a lot to pay for tracking that GoAffPro does for $49. Buy it while the marketplace and the automation are earning their keep, watch the tier crossovers because they arrive earlier than you expect, and revisit the decision once your program is mature.
