The short answer

Both sides assessed

Chargebee compared with Lemon Squeezy

Comparing 0.80 percent against 5 percent is the most common analytical error buyers make here, because Chargebee's rate sits on top of your own processor while Lemon Squeezy's is all-in and includes merchant of record status. Add Stripe to Chargebee and the honest comparison is roughly 3.7 percent against 6 percent, with that difference buying away VAT registration, filing, and liability. Chargebee is by far the more expressive billing system, with tiered, volume, and usage models across more than 40 gateways. Take Chargebee once you have complex pricing and someone to own compliance; take Lemon Squeezy while the filings would cost more than the fee gap.

Lemon Squeezy compared with Chargebee

Chargebee is a billing layer, not a merchant of record, which is the single most misunderstood difference between these two. It calculates tax but does not file or remit it, so VAT registration and returns stay with your company, and its 0.80 percent sits on top of whatever your processor charges. In exchange you get gateway independence across more than 40 processors, usage-based and hybrid billing on the base plan, and no platform fee to start. Indie sellers without a finance function should stay on Lemon Squeezy; companies with multi-currency, usage-based, or sales-assisted pricing should move to Chargebee.

Choose Chargebee if

SaaS companies past the earliest stage that want a real billing system without giving up their processor relationships or five points of gross margin, especially teams with complex pricing, usage-based or hybrid models, multiple currencies, or a mix of self-serve and sales-assisted revenue, and who either have a finance function or are close enough to hiring one to handle their own tax filings.

Choose Lemon Squeezy if

Indie developers, solo founders, and small teams selling digital products globally who want checkout, subscriptions, tax compliance, license keys, affiliates, and email marketing from one vendor with no monthly fee, and who are comfortable with a platform whose parent company is building its successor.

Setup timeDays to weeks. Hosted pages and a drop-in checkout get a simple catalog live quickly, but the real work is modelling your product catalog properly, and any company with legacy grandfathered pricing should budget for that rather than discovering it midway. An afternoon to build, potentially weeks to activate. The checkout can be embedded or shared as a link almost immediately and the API is straightforward, but seller verification since the Stripe acquisition has reportedly taken considerably longer than it did before, so do not schedule a launch against an assumed approval date.
Learning curveModerate to steep, in proportion to your pricing complexity. Chargebee exposes a great deal of configuration, which is why it can express pricing that simpler tools cannot and also why a poorly designed catalog becomes years of technical debt. The concepts of plans, addons, charges, price points, and entitlements need to be understood before you start, not during.Low. This is the friendliest product in the category by a wide margin, with clear documentation and an interface designed for people who are not payments engineers. The conceptual adjustment is the same as with any merchant of record: your revenue arrives as a payout from a vendor, not as a stream of customer payments, and your bookkeeping has to reflect that.

Strengths and limitations

Chargebee

Strengths

  • Pay-as-you-go at 0.80 percent with no platform fee means a small company can adopt a real billing system with no minimum, which most competitors in this weight class do not allow.
  • The pricing catalog is one of the most expressive available: flat, per unit, tiered, volume, stairstep, and usage models combinable in a single subscription, across currencies and geographies.
  • Gateway independence across more than 40 processors preserves your negotiated rates and enables multi-gateway retry routing, a recovery lever a single-processor setup structurally cannot use.
  • Usage-based and hybrid billing are on the base plan with 100 million monthly events included, not paywalled behind an enterprise tier.

Limitations

  • Not a merchant of record. Tax is calculated but not filed or remitted, so VAT registration, returns, and remittance are entirely your company's legal responsibility, and this is the single most misunderstood thing about the product.
  • The percentage is only part of your cost, since processing sits on top, and comparing 0.80 percent against a merchant of record's 5 percent without adding Stripe is the most common analytical error buyers make here.
  • Revenue recognition, quoting beyond 50 free quotes, and the retention product are all sales-gated with unpublished pricing, so a finance-complete configuration is not self-serve and not transparently priced.
  • Chargebee is a configuration-heavy platform, and the setup that makes it powerful also means a badly modelled catalog produces years of billing debt.

Lemon Squeezy

Strengths

  • The widest feature surface of any small-seller merchant of record: subscriptions, one-time sales, license keys, file delivery, affiliates, lead magnets, pay-what-you-want, and email marketing in one product.
  • Genuinely all-inclusive pricing, with 16 payment methods, up to 130 currencies, fraud protection, and recovery tooling folded into the 5 percent rather than surcharged.
  • Merchant of record status removes global VAT and sales tax registration, filing, and remittance from your company entirely, which is the only part of billing that is a legal risk rather than an operational chore.
  • Excellent product design and documentation, which is why it became the default among indie developers and why the API is pleasant to integrate against.

Limitations

  • Stripe owns the product and is publicly building a migration path to Stripe Managed Payments, which entered public preview in February 2026. The roadmap is not Lemon Squeezy's to set, and the strategic direction is succession.
  • Onboarding review times have reportedly stretched from days to weeks since the acquisition as Stripe's compliance standards are applied, so a launch date cannot assume fast activation.
  • Feature velocity has visibly slowed, which is the predictable behavior of an acquired product whose parent is building the successor.
  • Six percent effective is expensive relative to a billing layer on your own processor, and the rate does not fall with scale unless you negotiate.

Pricing compared

Chargebee

Percentage of billing value with an optional monthly platform fee that buys a lower rate, plus separately sold and sales-gated modules for revenue recognition, quoting, and retention.

  • Flow, pay as you go$0 + 0.80%
  • Flow, commit monthly$99 + 0.65%
  • Enterprise PlusCustom

Chargebee Flow at 0.80 percent is the best-priced serious billing platform available to a small company, and the pay-as-you-go structure means you can adopt it at $2,000 of monthly revenue without a floor punishing you. Combined with your own Stripe account you land near 4.3 percent, roughly 1.7 points below a merchant of record, with far more pricing flexibility, gateway independence, multi-gateway retry routing, and 100 million usage events a month included. The catch is entirely non-technical: you have bought a billing system, not a compliance service, and the work Paddle or Creem would absorb stays on your desk. Add tax automation at around 0.5 percent and the gap narrows to about 1.2 points, at which point the decision is genuinely about whether you want to own the filings. If you do, Chargebee is excellent value. If you were hoping not to think about it, you have bought the wrong architecture.

Lemon Squeezy

Transaction-based merchant of record fee with no monthly platform charge for ecommerce, plus a separate subscriber-count-based fee for the email marketing module.

  • Ecommerce5% + $0.50
  • Email marketing$0
  • Volume pricingCustom

Judged purely on capability per dollar, Lemon Squeezy is one of the better deals in the category: at the same 5 percent plus 50 cents that Paddle charges, you also get license keys, an affiliate program, digital file delivery, lead magnets, pay-what-you-want pricing, and an email marketing tool, none of which Paddle bundles. If the acquisition had never happened this would be an easy recommendation for indie sellers. The acquisition did happen, and it changes the calculation, because the value of a merchant of record is measured over years and the exit cost is high. Paying a fair price for a good product whose parent is publicly building its replacement is not a bargain, it is a deferred migration. Existing sellers should stay and prepare; new sellers should price the migration into the decision.

Editorial verdict on each

Chargebee

Chargebee is the best-priced serious billing platform a small company can adopt, and the 2026 Flow structure at $0 plus 0.80 percent removes the last reason not to start early. The catalog is the most expressive in this batch, usage and hybrid billing are included rather than paywalled, gateway independence preserves your negotiated rates and unlocks multi-gateway retry routing, and fifteen years of operating history with $475M raised makes it the most institutionally solid vendor here. Combined with your own Stripe account you land near 4.3 percent, roughly 1.7 points below a merchant of record, and your customers' cards stay with your processor so you are not locked in the way a merchant of record locks you in. The thing to be honest about is what you are not buying. Chargebee calculates tax, it does not file it, and it does not become the seller. If you have no finance function and sell globally, that 1.7 points of saving will be consumed by the work it hands back to you, and Paddle or Creem is the better answer. If you have someone who can own registrations and filings, or you sell mostly domestically, this is the right architecture and the right price.

Lemon Squeezy

Lemon Squeezy is the most complete merchant of record aimed at small sellers, and at the same 5 percent plus 50 cents Paddle charges you also get license keys, affiliates, file delivery, lead magnets, pay-what-you-want pricing, and email marketing. On features and craft it is excellent. The problem is not the product, it is the ownership. Stripe bought it in 2024, launched its own merchant of record into public preview in February 2026, and Lemon Squeezy's own blog frames its job as easing users toward that successor. To answer the question plainly: it is alive, processing payments, and still taking new sellers, but onboarding has slowed and feature work has cooled. Existing sellers should stay, keep exporting their data, and treat the eventual migration as a project rather than an emergency. New sellers should recognize that the exit cost from any merchant of record is a re-authorization campaign across every subscriber, and that paying full price to enter a platform with a published succession plan is a strange way to start. Look at the independent alternatives first, then come back to this one if the bundled license keys and affiliate tooling are genuinely decisive.
