The short answer

Both sides assessed

Lemon Squeezy compared with Stripe Billing

Stripe Billing is roughly half the take rate, at 0.7 percent on top of standard processing against a flat 5 percent plus 50 cents, and it gives you one API and one customer object for payments and subscriptions. What it does not give you is merchant of record status: VAT, GST, and United States sales tax registration, filing, and legal liability all stay with your company even with Stripe Tax doing the arithmetic. Since Stripe owns Lemon Squeezy and is building its successor, this is increasingly a choice between two products from one vendor. Take Stripe Billing if you can carry your own tax compliance; take Lemon Squeezy if you would rather not.

Stripe Billing compared with Lemon Squeezy

Lemon Squeezy is a merchant of record, so global VAT, GST, and United States sales tax registration and remittance leave your company entirely, at 5 percent plus 50 cents against Stripe Billing's 0.7 percent on top of processing. That is roughly 6 percent against 3.6 percent, and the gap is the price of moving the tax liability off your balance sheet. Stripe now owns Lemon Squeezy and is building Stripe Managed Payments as its successor, which entered public preview in February 2026. Sell mostly to United States customers, or employ someone in finance, and stay on Stripe Billing; sell digital products globally as a small team and the merchant of record fee is usually cheaper than the accountant.

Choose Lemon Squeezy if

Indie developers, solo founders, and small teams selling digital products globally who want checkout, subscriptions, tax compliance, license keys, affiliates, and email marketing from one vendor with no monthly fee, and who are comfortable with a platform whose parent company is building its successor.

Choose Stripe Billing if

SaaS and digital companies that already run on Stripe and want subscriptions handled inside the same API, teams selling primarily to United States customers where merchant-of-record tax coverage is not worth a doubled take rate, developers who want full control over the checkout and billing logic, and anyone who values the depth of Stripe's documentation and ecosystem over a lower headline percentage.

Setup timeAn afternoon to build, potentially weeks to activate. The checkout can be embedded or shared as a link almost immediately and the API is straightforward, but seller verification since the Stripe acquisition has reportedly taken considerably longer than it did before, so do not schedule a launch against an assumed approval date.A day to a week. Payment Links and a hosted pricing table can be live in an afternoon with no code. A custom checkout with webhooks, proration handling, and a plan-change flow is realistically a week of engineering and another week of edge cases you did not anticipate.
Learning curveLow. This is the friendliest product in the category by a wide margin, with clear documentation and an interface designed for people who are not payments engineers. The conceptual adjustment is the same as with any merchant of record: your revenue arrives as a payout from a vendor, not as a stream of customer payments, and your bookkeeping has to reflect that.Low for developers, high for everyone else. The object model of customers, products, prices, subscriptions, and invoices is clean once understood, but it is a developer's mental model, and a non-technical operator will not configure a nontrivial plan structure alone.

Strengths and limitations

Lemon Squeezy

Strengths

  • The widest feature surface of any small-seller merchant of record: subscriptions, one-time sales, license keys, file delivery, affiliates, lead magnets, pay-what-you-want, and email marketing in one product.
  • Genuinely all-inclusive pricing, with 16 payment methods, up to 130 currencies, fraud protection, and recovery tooling folded into the 5 percent rather than surcharged.
  • Merchant of record status removes global VAT and sales tax registration, filing, and remittance from your company entirely, which is the only part of billing that is a legal risk rather than an operational chore.
  • Excellent product design and documentation, which is why it became the default among indie developers and why the API is pleasant to integrate against.

Limitations

  • Stripe owns the product and is publicly building a migration path to Stripe Managed Payments, which entered public preview in February 2026. The roadmap is not Lemon Squeezy's to set, and the strategic direction is succession.
  • Onboarding review times have reportedly stretched from days to weeks since the acquisition as Stripe's compliance standards are applied, so a launch date cannot assume fast activation.
  • Feature velocity has visibly slowed, which is the predictable behavior of an acquired product whose parent is building the successor.
  • Six percent effective is expensive relative to a billing layer on your own processor, and the rate does not fall with scale unless you negotiate.

Stripe Billing

Strengths

  • One API, one customer object, and one dashboard for payments and subscriptions, which eliminates the reconciliation problem that every bolt-on billing layer creates.
  • The pricing model coverage is genuinely broad: flat, seat, tiered, graduated, volume, usage, and hybrid combinations all expressible without custom billing code.
  • Smart Retries and the card account updater are best in class for involuntary churn recovery and are included in the 0.7 percent rather than sold separately.
  • Documentation, SDKs, test clocks, and sandboxes are the industry benchmark, so an engineer who has never used Stripe can ship a working subscription flow in a day.

Limitations

  • You are the merchant of record, so global VAT, GST, and United States sales tax registration and liability stay with you even if Stripe Tax does the arithmetic.
  • The fee stack compounds. Billing, Tax, and Revenue Recognition together add roughly 1.45 percent on top of processing, and every one of those was priced upward or introduced after the fact.
  • The July 2024 plan consolidation raised the effective rate 40 percent for small accounts, and there is no contractual protection against that happening again on a pay-as-you-go plan.
  • Support below enterprise volume is email and chat with no named contact, and account freezes or reserve requirements are a well-documented risk with limited escalation path.

Pricing compared

Lemon Squeezy

Transaction-based merchant of record fee with no monthly platform charge for ecommerce, plus a separate subscriber-count-based fee for the email marketing module.

  • Ecommerce5% + $0.50
  • Email marketing$0
  • Volume pricingCustom

Judged purely on capability per dollar, Lemon Squeezy is one of the better deals in the category: at the same 5 percent plus 50 cents that Paddle charges, you also get license keys, an affiliate program, digital file delivery, lead magnets, pay-what-you-want pricing, and an email marketing tool, none of which Paddle bundles. If the acquisition had never happened this would be an easy recommendation for indie sellers. The acquisition did happen, and it changes the calculation, because the value of a merchant of record is measured over years and the exit cost is high. Paying a fair price for a good product whose parent is publicly building its replacement is not a bargain, it is a deferred migration. Existing sellers should stay and prepare; new sellers should price the migration into the decision.

Work it at a $50 average ticket. At $10,000 a month that is 200 transactions: $290 plus $60 in processing, plus $70 for Billing, totalling $420, or 4.2 percent. At $100,000 a month across 2,000 transactions the ratio is identical at 4.2 percent, because every component is proportional. Add Stripe Tax and you are at 4.7 percent, add Revenue Recognition and you are near 4.95 percent. Against Paddle at 5 percent plus 50 cents, which works out at 6 percent on the same ticket, Stripe looks cheaper by roughly 1.3 points, and that gap is precisely the price of the merchant-of-record service you are declining. If your customers are mostly domestic and you have an accountant, Stripe is the better economics. If you are selling to forty countries from a two-person company, the 1.3 points buys you not filing forty tax returns, and Stripe is the false economy.

Editorial verdict on each

Lemon Squeezy

Lemon Squeezy is the most complete merchant of record aimed at small sellers, and at the same 5 percent plus 50 cents Paddle charges you also get license keys, affiliates, file delivery, lead magnets, pay-what-you-want pricing, and email marketing. On features and craft it is excellent. The problem is not the product, it is the ownership. Stripe bought it in 2024, launched its own merchant of record into public preview in February 2026, and Lemon Squeezy's own blog frames its job as easing users toward that successor. To answer the question plainly: it is alive, processing payments, and still taking new sellers, but onboarding has slowed and feature work has cooled. Existing sellers should stay, keep exporting their data, and treat the eventual migration as a project rather than an emergency. New sellers should recognize that the exit cost from any merchant of record is a re-authorization campaign across every subscriber, and that paying full price to enter a platform with a published succession plan is a strange way to start. Look at the independent alternatives first, then come back to this one if the bundled license keys and affiliate tooling are genuinely decisive.

Stripe Billing

Stripe Billing is the safe answer, and for a United States focused SaaS company with an engineer on staff it is also usually the right one. At roughly 4.2 percent all in on a $50 ticket it undercuts every merchant of record by more than a point, the pricing model coverage is the broadest available, Smart Retries and the account updater are genuinely best in class, and card portability means leaving is possible rather than theoretical. The counterargument is compounding: Billing at 0.7 percent, Tax at 0.5 percent, Revenue Recognition at 0.25 percent, plus whatever you spend on metrics and entitlements, and a company that started at a clean 2.9 percent finds itself near 5 with four separate invoices. And the tax liability is still yours. Buy Stripe if you sell mostly at home, write code, and want the deepest ecosystem in software. Buy a merchant of record if you sell everywhere and would rather pay a visible premium than discover an unfiled VAT return two years late.
