The short answer

Both sides assessed

EngageBay compared with Mailmodo

Mailmodo is free at 500 contacts with 2,000 sends, one seat, and one journey, with Pro at $79 to $99 a month, and gives you interactive AMP email that EngageBay cannot do. EngageBay charges $64.99 per user for a whole marketing, sales, and support suite with 5,000 contacts. These are not really substitutes. If in-email forms and bookings are a measured revenue driver on a Gmail-heavy list, Mailmodo earns its premium; otherwise EngageBay gives you many times more platform per dollar.

Mailmodo compared with EngageBay

EngageBay bundles marketing automation, a CRM, deal pipelines, and a helpdesk from $64.99 per user, none of which Mailmodo attempts. Mailmodo does one thing EngageBay cannot do at all. These are not really substitutes: EngageBay is the operational suite, Mailmodo is a conversion experiment. If budget forces a choice and you are not certain about AMP, take the suite.

Choose EngageBay if

Small businesses and agencies under roughly 25 people who want marketing automation, a CRM, and a helpdesk from one vendor on one contact database, whose triggers are forms, tags, and deal stages rather than in-product events, and whose budget for the whole stack is a few hundred dollars a month.

Choose Mailmodo if

Consumer-facing businesses with meaningful Gmail share on their list who run surveys, feedback requests, NPS, bookings, or quick-conversion campaigns often enough that removing the click-through step measurably changes revenue, and who are comfortable with a meter on both contacts and sends.

Setup timeA day to import contacts, connect a sending domain, and publish a first form. A week to have real workflows running if you are migrating existing sequences. The suite breadth means the temptation is to configure everything at once, which is how implementations stall.A day to import contacts, authenticate a domain, and send a static campaign. Longer for the AMP path, because Google, Yahoo, and Mail.ru whitelisting are separate approval processes with their own turnaround times and nothing interactive renders until they complete.
Learning curveLow for anyone who has used HubSpot or Mailchimp, because the concepts map directly. The workflow canvas is the only part that needs a deliberate hour, and the main confusion is the interaction between lists, tags, and segments, which overlap more than they should.Low for the editor and journey builder, which are conventional. The genuinely new learning is strategic rather than technical: working out which of your campaigns benefit from in-email interaction and which are just newsletters that do not.

Strengths and limitations

EngageBay

Strengths

  • Breadth per dollar is the best in this category: marketing automation, CRM, and helpdesk on one contact record for less than most vendors charge for email alone.
  • The free tier is a real product rather than a demo, including CRM, live chat, helpdesk, and capture forms at 250 contacts.
  • Contact caps are fair relative to price, and Pro's 10,000-contact allowance is priced below contact-metered competitors.
  • Bringing your own sending provider is supported and documented, which decouples your volume economics from EngageBay's plan allowances.

Limitations

  • No product event stream and no real-time segmentation engine, so behaviour-triggered lifecycle messaging in the modern sense is not achievable here.
  • The per-user meter combined with account-level contact caps produces awkward pricing for teams with many light users or very large lists.
  • The visual automation builder starts at Growth, four and a half times the advertised entry price.
  • Deliverability tooling is minimal: no seed testing, no inbox placement reporting, and no dedicated IP story on self-serve plans.

Mailmodo

Strengths

  • Genuinely differentiated: no mainstream competitor makes interactive AMP email practical for a non-technical marketer, and building it yourself is not realistic.
  • The in-email form and rating blocks solve a real measurable problem, and response rates on feedback and survey campaigns improve materially where AMP renders.
  • Automatic HTML fallback means the interactive layer never breaks the campaign for unsupported clients, so the downside is bounded.
  • Mailmodo handles the fiddly Google, Yahoo, and Mail.ru whitelisting process rather than leaving it to you, which is a real service.

Limitations

  • Plans are multiply constrained: Lite has one seat and one journey, and every plan meters sends against contacts, which is a tighter envelope than unlimited-send competitors at similar prices.
  • AMP only renders in Gmail, Yahoo Mail, and Mail.ru, so the differentiator reaches a fraction of most lists and none of an Outlook-heavy B2B audience.
  • The 500 active contacts per journey cap on Lite and Pro is a hard limit unrelated to your total contact count and is easy to miss when comparing plans.
  • Email only: no SMS, no push, no in-app messaging, so any multi-channel lifecycle programme needs a second platform.

Pricing compared

EngageBay

Per-user subscription with an account-level contact cap and a branded-email allowance layered on top, in four tiers, discounted 8 percent annually and 15 percent biennially.

  • Free$0
  • Basic$14.99
  • Growth$64.99
  • Pro$119.99

Modelled at 5,000 contacts with two seats, Growth costs about $130 a month for automation, email, landing pages, forms, CRM, and helpdesk together, which no single-purpose competitor comes close to on breadth per dollar. Modelled at 10,000 contacts with two seats, Pro is about $240 a month, and the comparison against HubSpot Marketing Hub Professional at $800 plus a $3,000 onboarding fee is not close. The catch is the per-seat multiplier: add a sixth user and EngageBay stops being the cheap option, because you are paying full price again for someone who logs in twice a week. Buy it small.

Mailmodo

Tiered subscription metered on contacts and email sending credits simultaneously, with seat, active-journey, custom-domain, and API rate limits set per tier. Annual billing is advertised at 20 percent off monthly.

  • LiteFree to $249
  • Pro$99
  • MaxCustom

Measured on conventional capability per dollar, Mailmodo is fair rather than cheap: Pro at $79 to $99 a month buys three seats, ten journeys, and sends at six times contacts, where GetResponse Marketer gives unlimited sends, five seats, and unlimited workflows for around $59, and EngageBay gives a whole CRM and helpdesk besides. Modelled at 5,000 contacts you are into higher tiers on a meter that charges for both list and volume, and at 50,000 contacts you are almost certainly negotiating a Max quote. The only sound reason to accept that premium is a measured conversion lift from interactive email on your specific audience. That lift is real for feedback, surveys, bookings, and quick promotions on Gmail-heavy consumer lists, and close to zero for a B2B list full of Outlook users. Test before you commit to a year.

Editorial verdict on each

EngageBay

Best Value

EngageBay is the correct answer to a narrow but very common question: how does a business with fewer than 25 people get marketing automation, a CRM, and a helpdesk on one database without spending four figures a month. It is not the best tool in any single one of those categories and it never claims to be. What it is, is coherent, cheap, self-serve, and bootstrapped by a company with no reason to reprice you. Buy the Growth plan, not the $14.99 headline, because that is where the automation builder lives. Do not buy it if your lifecycle triggers are product events rather than form fills, because that architecture simply does not exist here, and no amount of price advantage compensates for a trigger you cannot fire.

Mailmodo

Innovation

Mailmodo is a single good idea executed properly and priced aggressively. Interactive email genuinely works where it renders, the editor makes AMP accessible to people who would never hand-write it, the HTML fallback bounds the risk, and having the vendor handle Google, Yahoo, and Mail.ru whitelisting removes real friction. Against that, every plan meters sends against contacts, Lite has one seat and one journey, and GetResponse or EngageBay give more seats and unlimited sends at similar prices, and the differentiator does not reach Apple Mail or Outlook at all. Buy it if you have a Gmail-heavy consumer list and a specific conversion problem that lives in the gap between the inbox and the landing page, and prove the lift with a test before you sign an annual contract. Do not buy it as a general-purpose marketing automation platform, because judged that way it is narrow.
