Gorgias compared with Zendesk

Zendesk is the general-purpose incumbent: a deeper ticketing engine, skills-based routing, multi-brand help centers, and contractual SLA reporting that Gorgias has never attempted, at $55 per agent per month on Suite Team, and it needs a dedicated administrator to stay useful. Gorgias trades that breadth for Shopify order actions inside the ticket, revenue attribution, and a bill tied to ticket volume rather than headcount. The two models fail in opposite directions: per-agent pricing punishes the store that hires four seasonal agents, while ticket pricing charges the small team hardest exactly when a volume spike hits. Choose Zendesk if your customers have no order numbers; choose Gorgias if they do.

Zendesk compared with Gorgias

Gorgias does one thing Zendesk cannot: it puts the Shopify order inside the ticket, lets agents refund, cancel, and edit it in place, and attributes revenue back to support conversations. It also bills by ticket volume rather than per seat, so Pro is $360 a month with unlimited agents, which suits a seasonal or agency rota but makes the invoice move with your traffic instead of staying flat. The cost is scope. Take away the order object and Gorgias is a shared inbox without Zendesk's custom fields, skills-based routing, multi-brand help centers, or SLA reporting. A Shopify store should take Gorgias; a company supporting a non-ecommerce product should stay here and accept the per-seat bill.

Choose Gorgias if

Direct-to-consumer Shopify stores doing between a few hundred and a few thousand support conversations a month, especially ones with seasonal volume spikes and a part-time or agency support rota, where most tickets are order-status, returns, and exchanges and where the fastest fix is an agent acting on the order from inside the ticket.

Choose Zendesk if

Support organisations that have outgrown a shared inbox and need a real ticketing engine: teams of roughly eight agents and up, companies with multiple brands or products, businesses with contractual SLAs to meet, and anyone whose support genuinely spans email, chat, social, and phone and needs all of it in one queue with one set of reports.

Setup timeHalf a day to be answering tickets, one to two weeks to be answering them well. Connecting the store and forwarding the support address is quick; building the macro library, the rules, and the help center content that actually reduces handle time is the part teams underestimate.A working instance in a day: connect the support address, invite agents, install the Web Widget, and use the default views and triggers. A configuration you actually want, with your own ticket fields, forms, views, macros, SLA policies, and business hours, is a two to six week project depending on how complicated your support is.
Learning curveLow for agents, who mostly need to learn that the order actions are in the sidebar. Moderate for the person who owns the account, because Rules, Macros, Views, and AI Guidance interact, and a badly written auto-reply Rule can make otherwise free tickets billable.Steep for the administrator, moderate for agents. The agent interface is learnable in a couple of hours. The admin surface, with triggers, automations, views, forms, routing, brands, and Explore, is a genuine skill and there is a whole consulting industry around it for a reason.

Strengths and limitations

Gorgias

Strengths

  • The only mainstream help desk that does not price by seat above the entry tiers, which is a structural advantage for stores with seasonal, part-time, or agency support staffing.
  • Shopify actions inside the ticket are the real product. Refunding, cancelling, and editing orders without leaving the conversation removes the tab-switching that is most of the actual work in ecommerce support.
  • Revenue statistics attribute sales back to support conversations, which is the single most useful reporting feature in this category and is not offered by Help Scout, Freshdesk, or Front.
  • Honest AI billing boundary: you are charged for a conversation the AI resolves or for the human ticket it becomes, not for both.

Limitations

  • The AI Agent requires Shopify. BigCommerce, Adobe Commerce, and WooCommerce merchants get the 2022 help desk while paying for a company whose entire current positioning is the AI.
  • Two meters running at once makes the bill hard to forecast, and voice and SMS add two more. Budgeting for Gorgias is a modelling exercise, not a line item.
  • The three-seat cap on Starter and Basic quietly undermines the marketing claim of never charging per agent, and pushing to Pro for a fourth agent is a jump from $60 to $360.
  • Nothing here fits non-commerce businesses. Strip out the order object and you have an ordinary shared inbox priced against a commerce feature set you cannot use.

Zendesk

Strengths

  • The most capable ticketing data model at self-serve prices: custom fields, ticket forms, conditional fields, and a rule engine that handles genuinely complex operations.
  • True omnichannel intake where email, messaging, chat, social, and voice all become the same ticket object with one set of views, reports, and SLAs.
  • The multi-brand Help Center with custom domains, full theme control, article permissions, and community forums is the strongest knowledge base in the category.
  • SLA policies with business-hours calendars and per-target thresholds are mature and are the reason B2B companies with contractual commitments end up here.

Limitations

  • The customer-facing experience is unmistakably a ticket system. Reference numbers, portal links, and formal templates are the default, and teams who want support to feel like a personal email conversation are fighting the product.
  • The published price is a fraction of the real price. Copilot at $50 per agent, Contact Center at $83 per agent, and resolutions at $1.50 to $2.00 each stack quickly on top of a $55 seat.
  • Suite Team is missing things that feel basic: side conversations, skills-based routing, IVR, and custom reporting all require the $115 Professional tier.
  • The included AI resolution allowance of five to ten per agent per month is small enough to be decorative.

Pricing compared

Gorgias

Volume-based subscription metered by billable tickets rather than agent seats, with a separate usage meter for AI Agent resolutions and further usage-based add-ons for voice and SMS.

  • Starter$10
  • Basic$60
  • Pro$360
  • Advanced$900

For a Shopify store doing 1,000 to 3,000 tickets a month with a fluctuating agent count, Gorgias is the best-priced serious help desk on the market, and it is not close: Pro at $360 with unlimited seats beats six or eight Help Scout seats plus a Shopify connector, and the order actions save real minutes per ticket. Below about 300 tickets a month the calculation inverts, because you are paying a platform fee to answer a volume that a shared Gmail with labels handles for nothing. And the AI Agent should be judged as a separate purchase with its own business case, not as a feature of the plan: at roughly a dollar a resolution it is priced like a contractor, and it deserves the same scrutiny you would give one.

Zendesk

Per-agent subscription across a cheap Support-only line and a full Suite line, with outcome-based billing for AI agents per automated resolution, plus per-agent add-ons for Copilot, Contact Center, and workforce engagement.

  • Support Team$19
  • Suite Team$55
  • Suite Professional$115
  • Suite Enterprise with CopilotContact sales

Zendesk is not overpriced for what it is, but it is very easy to underestimate. Suite Team at $55 a seat buys the most capable ticketing engine, routing system, and multi-brand help center available at self-serve prices, and the platform genuinely scales from ten agents to a thousand without a replatform. The trouble is that the honest configuration for a mid-sized team is Suite Professional at $115, plus Copilot at $50, plus a resolution meter at $1.50 each, which puts a five-agent team comfortably past $1,000 a month before voice. Compared to Zoho Desk at $23 a seat with AI bundled, or Freshdesk at $55 with 500 AI sessions included, Zendesk is charging a large premium for depth that most small businesses will never use. Buy it because you need the engine, not because you need the AI.

Editorial verdict on each

Gorgias

Gorgias is the right answer for Shopify stores and close to the wrong answer for everyone else. The ticket meter and unlimited seats above Pro genuinely suit a support team whose headcount moves with the season, the order actions inside the ticket save minutes on every conversation that a general help desk cannot, and revenue attribution is the only reporting feature in this bracket that lets a support lead argue in the language finance speaks. What has to be modelled before you buy is the second meter: at roughly $0.90 a resolution the AI Agent can cost more than the help desk itself, and it does not run on BigCommerce or Magento at all, which makes the 2026 marketing story inapplicable to a meaningful chunk of the addressable market. Buy it if you are on Shopify, doing more than a few hundred tickets a month, and willing to treat the AI as a separate purchase with its own business case. Skip it if your customers do not have order numbers, if your volume is small enough that a shared Gmail still works, or if a variable invoice is something your finance team will not tolerate.

Zendesk

Zendesk is still the most capable customer service platform you can buy without a procurement process, and for support that is genuinely an operation, with queues, brands, contractual SLAs, and a phone line, nothing else at self-serve prices matches the engine. The honest warning is about the bill. The $19 Support Team plan is a trapdoor, Suite Team at $55 is missing things you will want, the tier you actually need is $115, Copilot is another $50 a seat, real voice is another $83, and AI resolutions run $1.50 to $2.00 apiece against an allowance small enough to ignore. Zendesk's May 2026 decision to stop charging for assisted escalations and unverified resolutions is a genuine improvement and more honest than most competitors' definitions, but it does not change the shape of the invoice. Buy Zendesk because you need the ticketing engine and will use it. If you are under eight agents doing email-led support, Help Scout, Zoho Desk, or Freshdesk will make you happier for a third of the money.
