The short answer
Both sides assessedLob compared with Thanks.io
Thanks.io matches or beats Lob's postcard rate on its $49 Business plan ($0.77 with postage) and adds printed handwriting, a campaign builder, and native HubSpot for non-developers, but has no compliance attestation; keep Lob for regulated transactional mail at scale, and consider Thanks.io for marketing and relationship mail a small team runs itself.
Thanks.io compared with Lob
Lob is the developer-first print-and-mail API with postcards from about 90 cents, compliance credentials Thanks.io does not have, and monthly plans from $260 once volume grows. Thanks.io matches or beats Lob's postcard rate on its paid plans ($0.77 or $0.64), adds handwriting, a campaign builder, and HubSpot for non-developers, and asks $49 rather than $260 for the first paid tier. Pick Lob for regulated transactional mail at scale; pick Thanks.io for marketing and relationship mail a small team runs itself.
Choose Lob if
Developer-led teams and ecommerce or fintech operations that need physical mail triggered by application events at volume, and any small business that wants to send a few thousand pieces a year at under a dollar each without hiring a print vendor.
Choose Thanks.io if
Small businesses, real estate and mortgage agents, insurance agents, ecommerce brands, and developers who want printed mail with a handwritten look at under two dollars a piece, all-in with postage, with no minimum order and a real API or HubSpot trigger behind it.

| Best for | Developer-led teams and ecommerce or fintech operations that need physical mail triggered by application events at volume, and any small business that wants to send a few thousand pieces a year at under a dollar each without hiring a print vendor. | Small businesses, real estate and mortgage agents, insurance agents, ecommerce brands, and developers who want printed mail with a handwritten look at under two dollars a piece, all-in with postage, with no minimum order and a real API or HubSpot trigger behind it. |
| Setup time | An afternoon for a developer to make the first live send: create an account, take the test key, render a template, switch to the live key. A production lifecycle mail program with triggers, verification, and webhook handling is a one to two week engineering project. | Minutes to a first send: create an account, pick a template or sync a Canva design, type a message, upload a CSV, and pay from the balance. HubSpot or Zapier triggers take an hour or two; a full API integration using test mode is a day or two of developer time. |
| Learning curve | Low for developers, high for everyone else. HTML templates and REST calls are familiar territory if you write code and completely foreign if you do not. Marketing teams typically need engineering support for the initial build and can then operate campaigns from the dashboard. | Low for single sends and uploads. The campaign builder, evenFLOW pacing, and QR scan actions take a session or two to understand, and the harder skill is writing a short message that does not read like an ad printed in a handwriting font. |

Strengths and limitations
Lob
Strengths
- A free production plan covering up to 6,000 mailings a year, which lets a small business run real direct mail with no platform fee at all.
- Per-piece pricing under a dollar with postage included, roughly three to four times cheaper per delivered piece than handwritten-note vendors and far below any gifting platform's cost per touch.
- The best attribution in the category: eight tracking events per piece delivered through the API and webhooks, keyed to your own record identifiers, so a controlled experiment is genuinely possible.
- A distributed Print Delivery Network with Postal IQ routing, GRACoL color standards, and monthly printer quality reviews, which is infrastructure no individual buyer could assemble.
Limitations
- It is not a gifting platform in any sense: no catalog, no recipient choice, no gift cards, no spend approvals, and no fulfilment of physical products.
- Nothing it produces looks handwritten. If the goal is a piece that reads as personal correspondence, Lob is the wrong tool no matter how good the print quality is.
- It requires engineering time. The dashboard exists but the product is an API, and non-technical marketing teams will not get value from it without a developer.
- The print network is US-based, so international mailing is not the use case despite international address verification being available.
Thanks.io
Strengths
- Postage is included in every published rate and every rate is published, including international, nonprofit, and data-service prices, which removes the arithmetic most direct mail vendors leave to the buyer.
- No minimum order and a $0 plan: a single 4x6 postcard costs $1.18 delivered, and the per-piece rate does not change with batch size.
- A full REST API, OpenAPI spec, and test mode on the free plan, plus webhooks and an agent-ready MCP server with a mandatory cost preview on paid plans.
- Ten campaign types, QR scan actions that can start the next touch automatically, and a native HubSpot integration that is being actively extended.
Limitations
- The handwriting is printed by a digital engine, not written with a pen, so it fails the smudge test that robot-pen vendors pass.
- No compliance attestation yet: the trust page describes SOC 2-aligned controls on AWS and Cloudflare but lists SOC 2 Type I as planned, and HIPAA is not advertised.
- Gift cards are US-only, require a paid plan, and are the only gift option; there is no gift catalog, swag, or recipient-choice flow.
- Standard Mail on paid plans has no USPS tracking and no return-to-sender, and the vendor's own pages disagree on delivery windows.

Per physical touch delivered, Lob is the cheapest option in this category by a factor of three or four, and the free plan means a small business can run 6,000 pieces a year for nothing but per-piece cost. That comparison is not entirely fair, because a Lob postcard and a handwritten note are not the same product, and neither is a gift. What is fair to say is that if the piece does not need to look personal, paying $3.58 for a handwritten card or a platform fee for a gifting seat is money spent on a format decision rather than on reaching the recipient. Lob is also the only vendor here with SOC 2 Type 2, HIPAA-capable routing, and eight tracking events per piece, which makes it the value leader on infrastructure quality as well as price.

On price per physical touch with postage included, Thanks.io is the cheapest handwriting-look option in this category and one of the cheapest ways to mail anything at all: $0.64 to $1.18 for a 4x6 postcard delivered, with no minimum and no required subscription. The comparison that matters is with the pen-and-robot vendors. Handwrytten's cheapest no-commitment card is $3.75 before postage, so a Thanks.io Professional notecard at $1.49 with postage included is well under half the all-in price. What you give up for that is the pen: the handwriting is printed, and a careful recipient can tell. For postcards, farming mail, and post-purchase cards that trade is easily worth it. For a founder's note to a named enterprise buyer, it may not be. Against Lob and PostGrid the postcard rates are similar or better on the paid plans, and Thanks.io adds handwriting, campaign automation, and HubSpot without a developer.
Editorial verdict on each
Lob
Category LeaderLob is not a gifting platform and does not pretend to be, but it is the strongest piece of physical mail infrastructure a small business can get for free. Six thousand mailings a year at under a dollar each with postage included, eight tracking events per piece, address verification, SOC 2 Type 2, and HIPAA-capable print routing is a stack that nothing else in this category comes close to. The price of admission is engineering time and the acceptance that nothing you send will look handwritten. Buy it if physical mail is a lifecycle or transactional channel in your product and you have a developer. Do not buy it if what you actually need is a gift, a personal note, or an address you do not have, because Lob solves none of those problems and three other vendors here do.

Thanks.io is the cheapest way in this category to put something in a mailbox that looks handwritten, and the most transparent about what it costs: every rate is published, postage is inside it, there is no minimum order, and a $0 plan lets a solo agent send one postcard for $1.18. The automation is real rather than decorative, with ten campaign types, QR scans that trigger the next step, a HubSpot integration being extended month by month, and an API on the free plan. Two things decide whether it is right for you. First, the handwriting is printed, and the company says so; if the pen stroke is the point, buy Handwrytten or Simply Noted and pay two to three times as much. Second, there is no compliance attestation yet, so regulated senders should look at Lob. For a small business, an agent, or an ecommerce brand that wants trackable, personal-looking mail at postcard prices, it is the first product to try.
