By the Numbers compared with Putler

Putler matches By the Numbers on entry price ($20 against $19) and adds what a Shopify app cannot see, namely payment gateways, other carts, and marketplaces merged into one customer list. By the Numbers keeps a clear lead on activation, with hourly sync to Klaviyo, Meta, Google Ads, and TikTok against Putler's CSV and Mailchimp export, and a finer sixteen-cell RFM matrix. Single-store Shopify brands should stay with By the Numbers; multi-channel sellers are better served by Putler.

Putler compared with By the Numbers

Similar entry prices, different scope. By the Numbers is a $19 Shopify app with a sixteen-cell RFM matrix, more than seventy-five filters, and hourly sync to Klaviyo, Meta, Google Ads, and TikTok. Putler starts at $20, works across gateways, carts, and marketplaces, and uses eleven RFM segments, but exports only to CSV and Mailchimp. On a single Shopify store with Klaviyo, By the Numbers is the better tool; for a business selling in several places, it cannot see the other channels and Putler can.

Setup timeAbout a minute to install and connect, with the RFM matrix populating shortly after against the store's existing history. Sync connections to Klaviyo, Meta, Google, and TikTok take a few minutes each. The vendor says connecting accounts takes 10 to 15 minutes. Import and processing follow, and the RFM chart appears once processing finishes; a redraw takes about 90 minutes according to the help center.
Learning curveLow to moderate. The pre-built matrix and reports require nothing, but getting value from the seventy-five filters means knowing what you want to isolate, which is more work than describing a segment in a sentence.Low. RFM segments are ready without configuration and the dashboards need no setup; filters, saved segments, and drilldowns take a little exploration.

Strengths and limitations

By the Numbers

Strengths

  • The lowest entry price in the category by a wide margin, starting at $19 a month.
  • A genuine sixteen-cell RFM matrix rather than the simplified three-bucket version most cheap tools ship.
  • Hourly audience refresh, faster than the daily sync most competitors offer.
  • More than seventy-five segment filters spanning orders, products, lifetime value, and acquisition channel.

Limitations

  • Almost no public information about the vendor: no named founders, no funding history, no disclosed team.
  • Shopify only, with no path for stores on other platforms.
  • Segments are built by assembling filters rather than described in plain language, which is slower for non-analytical users.
  • No documented public API, so segments cannot be pushed into custom internal systems.

Putler

Strengths

  • Consolidates payment gateways, stores, marketplaces, and Google Analytics into one de-duplicated customer list, which no Shopify-only app in this category attempts.
  • Eleven named RFM segments calculated automatically and redrawn every 24 hours, with segment membership for any date range.
  • Works across PayPal, Stripe, WooCommerce, Shopify, BigCommerce, Magento, Etsy, eBay, Amazon, Gumroad, and Easy Digital Downloads.
  • Direct segment export to Mailchimp, plus CSV export for anything else.

Limitations

  • No live audience sync to Klaviyo, Meta, Google Ads, or TikTok; activation is CSV and Mailchimp.
  • RFM segments are fixed and automatic, with no documented way to change the scoring.
  • Revenue-based pricing penalizes high-ticket businesses and climbs to $750 a month at $500,000 to $1 million in revenue.
  • No published annual rate, and plan limits on data sources and history are not published per band.

On paper this is the best capability-per-dollar in the category and it is not close: a sixteen-cell RFM matrix, seventy-five filters, hourly syncing, and thirty-eight reports for a starting price under a fifth of what Tresl charges and a third of Repeat Customer Insights. The question is not whether it is cheap, it is whether the vendor is durable, since there is no public corporate information behind an app around two thousand stores now depend on. For a store weighing $19 against not segmenting at all, that risk is easy to accept. For one about to make it the backbone of every audience in Meta and Klaviyo, keep the segment definitions documented somewhere you control.

At the bottom of the market Putler is good value for a particular kind of business. A seller under $10,000 a month pays $20 for automatic RFM segments across every store and gateway it uses, data cleanup that the single-store apps never attempt, and sales and subscription reporting besides, which is about what By the Numbers charges for one Shopify store. The value case turns on activation and on scale. If segments need to reach Klaviyo, Meta, or Google Ads on their own, By the Numbers, Tresl, or Metorik do that and Putler does not. And because the meter is revenue rather than orders, a high-ticket business pays more than on Metorik, where $250 covers up to 5,000 orders; at $200,000 in monthly revenue Putler costs $350. The unresolved question of which bands include RFM, given older documentation, is worth settling in the trial.

Editorial verdict on each

By the Numbers

By the Numbers is the best capability-per-dollar in customer segmentation, and the gap is large enough that price alone settles many decisions. A real sixteen-cell RFM matrix, seventy-five filters, hourly syncing into Klaviyo and the ad platforms, and a broad reporting layer starting at $19 is not a stripped-down version of what competitors charge $150 for, it is most of the same job done more cheaply and, on refresh speed, done better. Two caveats. The vendor publishes essentially nothing about itself, so keep your important segment definitions written down somewhere you control, and confirm on the App Store listing which tier actually includes the sync before assuming the entry price covers it. For a Shopify store that has been putting off segmentation on cost grounds, there is no longer an excuse at this price.

Putler

Putler earns a place in this category for the business the Shopify apps cannot see: one that sells through several gateways, carts, and marketplaces and has never had a single, trustworthy customer list. It merges PayPal, Stripe, WooCommerce, Etsy, Amazon, and the rest into master records, then hands you eleven automatic RFM segments redrawn daily, saved and editable filters, and export to Mailchimp or CSV, for $20 a month under $10,000 in revenue. The limits are just as clear. There is no live audience sync to Klaviyo or the ad platforms, the RFM model cannot be tuned, revenue-based pricing gets expensive for high-ticket sellers, no annual rate is published, there are no refunds, and older help articles leave it unclear whether RFM is on every revenue band. Multi-channel sellers under a few hundred thousand dollars a month should trial it; single-store Shopify brands with a Klaviyo program should start with By the Numbers or Tresl.
