The short answer
Both sides assessedOptinMonster compared with Picreel
Picreel is the cheaper tool at the middle of the range, with 200,000 monthly pageviews and five domains on its Business tier for $39.99 a month billed annually, a 100-plus template library, AI design helpers, and advertised 24/7 phone support, and it has a free plan for up to 5,000 pageviews that OptinMonster does not. OptinMonster answers with a deeper rules engine, revenue attribution, and a WordPress-native plugin, and Picreel puts both exit intent and A/B testing further up its ladder, with split testing only on an annual-only Enterprise plan. Choose Picreel for a supported, low-cost exit-intent tool; choose OptinMonster when campaign depth and testing matter.
Picreel compared with OptinMonster
Both gate features by tier, so the comparison comes down to what each tier unlocks. OptinMonster has the deeper rules engine, revenue attribution, and the WordPress-native plugin, and its introductory annual price is lower at the bottom, though it renews at list price. Picreel charges less at the middle of the range for a larger pageview allowance and adds phone support, but puts A/B testing on its annual-only Enterprise tier. Choose OptinMonster for campaign depth and WordPress; choose Picreel for a cheap, supported popup tool you do not plan to split-test.
Choose OptinMonster if
Content sites, ecommerce stores, and agencies that already have meaningful traffic and want granular control over which visitor sees which offer, and that will pay for a targeting engine rather than settle for a generic popup builder.
Choose Picreel if
Small businesses and single-site ecommerce stores that want a cheap, conventional popup tool with a large template library and live phone support, and that can live without A/B testing unless they buy the Enterprise tier.

| Setup time | Under an hour to a first live campaign. Installing the script or plugin takes minutes, building a campaign from a template takes about twenty, and connecting an email platform is an OAuth or API key step. Configuring a well-segmented rule set across a real site is a longer project, typically a day of thought rather than a day of work. | Under an hour for a first campaign. Paste the snippet or deploy it through Google Tag Manager, pick a template or let the AI designer build one, set a trigger, and connect an email tool. Business customers get a dedicated onboarding manager. |
| Learning curve | Low for building a campaign, moderate for the rules engine. The editor is conventional drag and drop. The skill that takes time is display-rule discipline: deciding what each audience segment should see, setting cookie durations so people are not shown the same thing repeatedly, and resisting the urge to run five campaigns at once on the same page. | Low. The editor and templates are conventional, the AI editor removes most settings-panel work, and the targeting options are standard. The real learning cost is understanding which features your tier includes. |

Strengths and limitations
OptinMonster
Strengths
- The deepest display rules engine in the small-business lead capture category, combining page, behavior, referrer, cookie, JavaScript, geographic, and visit-history conditions with and/or logic.
- Exit intent that has been refined over a decade, including mobile handling that does not depend on a cursor.
- One global script or plugin covers a whole site, so campaigns can be launched and changed forever after without a code deploy.
- Unlimited campaigns and unlimited subscribers on every tier; the meter is impressions, not list size, which is unusually friendly for a growing list.
Limitations
- No free plan and no free trial. Evaluation requires paying up front and relying on a 14-day refund, which is out of step with the rest of the category.
- Renewal pricing is roughly 2.5 times the advertised introductory rate, and the discount framing makes that easy to miss at purchase.
- Exit-Intent technology, the feature the product is best known for, is locked to the third tier; A/B testing is locked to the second. The advertised $7 plan is not a usable version of the product for most buyers.
- Impression-based metering means bot and crawler traffic can consume the allowance without producing a single lead, a complaint that recurs in user reviews.
Picreel
Strengths
- Low entry price on annual billing: $9.99 a month for 50,000 pageviews is cheaper than most of the category at that volume.
- A large template library (100-plus) and 15-plus overlay formats, including spin-to-win, timer overlays, sidebars, video popups, and exit surveys.
- The AI tools cover the tasks a non-designer struggles with: generating a first draft, matching brand colors and fonts from a URL, and editing by instruction.
- Support coverage the vendor advertises as 24/7 across phone, chat, and email, with a dedicated onboarding manager on the Business tier, which is rare at this price.
Limitations
- Exit intent, the category's most used trigger, is listed only from the Business tier, and A/B testing only on Enterprise.
- The pricing page contradicts itself, describing the free plan as having all premium features while gating them by tier further down.
- Security claims are about the hosting providers (AWS and IBM hold SOC 2 Type 2 reports) rather than an audit of Picreel or ProProfs itself.
- The product is one of many in the ProProfs catalog, and there is little independent documentation, changelog, or roadmap specific to Picreel.
Pricing compared
OptinMonster

Advertised prices are a 60 percent introductory discount valid for the first 12 months; renewal is at list price. Monthly billing exists but is substantially more expensive per month. There is no free plan and no free trial.
- Basic$7
- Plus$19
- Pro$29
- Growth$49
Judged on first-year cost, OptinMonster is inexpensive for what it does: a $348 Pro plan that recovers a handful of abandoned carts a month pays for itself many times over on any store with real order values. Judged on renewal cost and gating honesty, it is a harder sell, because the plan most buyers need is $870 a year at list and the cheapest tiers withhold the two features (exit intent and A/B testing) that make the category work. Against free or near-free popup plugins the case rests entirely on the display rules engine; if you will never write a rule more complex than 'show on all pages after 5 seconds', you are paying for capability you will not use. If you will segment by referrer, cart value, geography, and visit count, nothing at this price point matches it.
Picreel
Tiered subscription metered by monthly pageviews and number of domains, with features gated by tier. Annual billing roughly halves the monthly rate on the two lower paid tiers; Enterprise is annual only. A permanent free plan covers up to 5,000 monthly pageviews.
- Free$0
- Essentials$9.99
- Business$39.99
- EnterpriseFrom $69.99
At the entry level Picreel is among the cheapest paid popup tools in the category: $119.88 a year buys 50,000 pageviews, unlimited popups, a large template library, and the AI designer, which is less than most rivals charge for a smaller allowance. The value holds only if Essentials actually meets the need, and for most buyers it will not, because exit intent is listed from Business and A/B testing from Enterprise. The honest comparison is therefore Business at $479.88 a year for 200,000 pageviews and five domains, which is still competitive with OptinMonster and Poptin at similar volume, and Enterprise at $839.88 a year for split testing, which is where Poptin's free-tier A/B testing and OptiMonk's all-features-on-every-plan model make Picreel look expensive. Buy it for the price of the middle tier and the phone support, not for testing.
Editorial verdict on each
OptinMonster
OptinMonster is still the reference product in onsite lead capture, and the reason is not the popups, which anyone can build, but the rules engine behind them. Being able to say show this offer only to Google Ads traffic on product pages, only when the cart is above a threshold, only on a second visit, and only as the visitor leaves, is a genuine capability gap over the cheaper tools, and for a store or publisher with real traffic it pays back quickly. The company is bootstrapped, profitable, and unlikely to disappear. The reservations are commercial rather than technical: no free plan and no trial in a category where free plans are standard, a renewal price roughly 2.5 times the advertised one, and gating that puts exit intent (the thing people buy it for) on the third tier. Go in knowing the real price is the Pro or Growth renewal figure, not the number on the pricing page, and it is a sound purchase. Go in expecting the $7 plan to be the product and you will be disappointed within a week.

Picreel is a cheap, conventional popup tool with a large template library, a useful set of new AI helpers, and the kind of phone support that is unusual at this price, all backed by ProProfs rather than a small independent team. The entry price is misleading, though. Essentials at $9.99 a month billed annually is real value for a basic popup, but the tier lists put exit intent on Business and A/B testing on an annual-only Enterprise plan, which is backwards compared with Poptin and OptiMonk, both of which include testing on their free plans. Buy Picreel at the Business tier if you want a supported, reasonably priced exit-intent and coupon tool for a handful of sites and you are not going to run split tests. If testing offers is how you plan to improve conversion, a competitor gives you that for less.
