Picreel

A decade-old exit popup tool, now part of ProProfs, priced from $9.99 a month

Picreel is a website popup and overlay builder, owned by ProProfs since January 2021, that shows lightboxes, nanobars, sidebars, spin-to-win wheels, countdown overlays, and exit surveys to visitors based on exit intent, scroll depth, time on page, clicks, and targeting rules, then sends the captured leads to an email platform or CRM. It installs as a JavaScript snippet or through Google Tag Manager, has a free plan for up to 5,000 monthly pageviews, and prices paid plans by monthly pageviews from $9.99 per month billed annually or $19.99 month to month.

Overview

Picreel is one of the older names in exit-intent popups. The company's own history page says Alex Bashinsky founded it in 2013, that Seedcamp named it one of Europe's top 20 innovative technology companies in 2014, that a Reno, Nevada private equity firm called Webfolio Management bought it in 2016, and that ProProfs acquired it in January 2021. Today it is sold as one product in the ProProfs catalog alongside ProProfs Survey Maker, Qualaroo, ProProfs Chat, and BIGContacts CRM. Almost everything about the current product, from the Santa Monica support line to the Cloudflare and AWS hosting described on the ProProfs trust page, comes from the parent company rather than from a standalone Picreel team.

The product itself is a conventional overlay builder with a long template list and a few recent additions. There are more than 100 templates across lightboxes, nanobars, sidebars, full-screen and two-step overlays, video popups, timer overlays, spin-to-win coupon wheels, and exit surveys, and the vendor claims 15-plus overlay styles and 700-plus integrations, most of the latter reached through Zapier. The newest additions are a set of AI features: describe the goal and the AI writes a popup, paste a URL and it pulls your logo, colors, and fonts, edit the popup by typing an instruction, and open a report to get an AI summary of when a campaign peaked or dipped.

Price is the reason a small business ends up here. Essentials is $9.99 per month billed annually ($119.88 a year) or $19.99 month to month for 50,000 pageviews on one domain, which undercuts most of the category at that volume. The catch is that the tier ladder gates the features a popup buyer usually wants first. Exit intent, spin-to-win, the timer overlay, geolocation targeting, multilingual popups, and unlimited users are listed on Business at $39.99 a month billed annually, and A/B testing, custom CSS, the API, and custom CRM field mapping are listed only on Enterprise, which starts at $69.99 a month on annual billing only. The pricing page also describes the free plan as including "all premium features", which the tier lists below it do not bear out, so the tier lists are the part to trust.

What ProProfs brings is support coverage that is unusual at this price: the vendor advertises 24/7 email, phone, and live chat support, a dedicated onboarding manager on Business, and a 30-day money-back guarantee framed as a promise of more leads or sales from existing traffic. What it does not bring is much independent product identity. Documentation is thin, the pricing page contradicts itself in places, and the roadmap is set by a company whose main business is training, quizzes, and help desk software.

Best for

Small businesses and single-site ecommerce stores that want a cheap, conventional popup tool with a large template library and live phone support, and that can live without A/B testing unless they buy the Enterprise tier.

Not the right fit for

  • Anyone who wants exit intent on the entry paid plan; on the published tier lists it starts at Business, $39.99 per month billed annually.
  • Teams that plan to run A/B tests routinely; split testing is listed only on Enterprise, which is annual-only and starts at $839.88 a year.
  • Agencies managing many client sites; Essentials is one domain, Business is five, and only Enterprise lifts the domain limit.
  • Buyers who need the popup vendor to send the follow-up email; the unlimited email sending on Enterprise is marked "Coming Soon" on the pricing page.
  • Organizations that need a published SOC 2 report for the product itself; ProProfs states that its hosting providers, AWS and IBM, hold SOC 2 Type 2 reports, which is not the same claim.

How it works

  1. 1

You sign up from the Picreel site with no credit card and land on the free plan or a 15-day trial. Installation is a JavaScript snippet pasted into the site's head, or the same snippet deployed through Google Tag Manager; the help center's getting-started section covers both. Integrations exist for WordPress, Shopify, BigCommerce, Magento, Wix, Squarespace, Joomla, Drupal, PrestaShop, OpenCart, Volusion, and Blogger.

  2. 2

You build a campaign from one of 100-plus templates, from scratch in the visual editor, from an uploaded image, or by describing the goal to the AI popup designer. The AI customizer can read your site URL and apply your logo, colors, and fonts, and the AI editor accepts plain-language changes such as a new width, font, background color, or button. An HTML and CSS mode exists for teams that want to hand-code the result, with custom CSS formally listed on Enterprise.

  3. 3

You attach triggers and targeting. Triggers include time on page, scroll depth, clicks on a page element, and exit intent; targeting covers pages and page content, referral source, device, new versus returning visitors, cookies, custom variables, JavaScript events, geolocation, and scheduling, with campaign prioritization deciding which offer wins when several qualify. Which of these you can actually use depends on the tier, since exit intent and geolocation sit on Business.

  4. 4

Leads flow out through native connections to Mailchimp, ActiveCampaign, AWeber, Constant Contact, GetResponse, Klaviyo, HubSpot, Salesforce, Marketo, Oracle Eloqua, Keap, Ontraport, and others, through Zapier for the long tail, or through a webhook. An email notification fires when a visitor submits a form, and reports show impressions and conversions per campaign in real time, with the AI summary layered on top.

Feature breakdown

25 features in 4 modules

Popup formats and builder

A conventional overlay editor with a big template library and a new AI layer on top.
100-plus templates
Prebuilt designs across exit popups, special offers, sign-up offers, discount offers, lead capture forms, and on-site messages, grouped by use case rather than by layout.
15-plus overlay styles
Lightbox, nanobar, sidebar, full-screen overlay, two-step overlay, multi-screen popup, mobile overlay, video or iframe popup, and exit survey, all from the same editor.
Spin-to-win coupon wheel
A gamified wheel that awards a discount or offer in exchange for an email address, listed from the Business tier up.
Timer overlay
A live countdown inside a popup for time-limited offers, also listed from Business up.
Advanced form builder
Custom fields, conditional logic, and layout controls inside the popup form, plus a privacy policy consent checkbox for GDPR-style opt-in.
Size, position, and animation controls
Where the popup appears, how large it is, and how it animates in, set per campaign rather than per template.
Upload your own design or edit HTML
A custom image can replace a template, and an HTML and CSS mode exists for hand edits, with custom CSS formally listed on Enterprise.

AI features

The newest part of the product, all described by the vendor rather than independently tested here.
AI popup designer
Describe the goal in plain language and the AI generates a formatted popup ready to publish, which the vendor claims converts twice as well.
AI brand customizer
Paste your website URL and the AI pulls your logo, colors, and fonts and applies them across your popups.
AI popup editor
Change height, width, text, background color, font, or buttons by typing an instruction instead of using the settings panels.
AI report summary
Opening a report triggers an AI pass that flags when a campaign peaked or dipped and what behavior patterns stand out, downloadable or shareable.

Triggers and targeting

The standard rule set, split across tiers in a way worth reading closely.
Exit-intent trigger
Fires when a visitor moves to leave the page; listed on the Business tier and above in the published plan lists.
Time, scroll, and click triggers
Show a popup after a delay, at a scroll depth, or when a visitor clicks a specific page element.
Page, referrer, and visitor targeting
Target by page URL or page content, referral source, device, and new versus returning visitors, so an offer is shown only where it is relevant.
Cookie, custom variable, and JavaScript targeting
Personalize by data you already hold about the visitor, such as a name or product interest, or fire on your own JavaScript events.
Geolocation targeting
Country, state, or city level targeting, listed from Business up.
Scheduling and campaign prioritization
Run offers on a timetable and rank campaigns so the most important one wins when several qualify for the same visitor.
Multilingual popups
Popups in any language for international traffic, listed from Business up.

Measurement, integrations, and support

Where the leads go, and the ProProfs support machinery behind the product.
Real-time reporting and analytics
Impressions and conversions per campaign as they happen, on every plan.
A/B testing
Head-to-head testing of two campaign versions, listed on the Enterprise tier in the published plan lists.
Native email and CRM integrations
Mailchimp, ActiveCampaign, AWeber, Constant Contact, GetResponse, Klaviyo, HubSpot, Salesforce, Marketo, Oracle Eloqua, Keap, Ontraport, Emarsys, Dotdigital, and others, plus Slack notifications for new leads.
Zapier and webhooks
The route to what the vendor counts as 700-plus integrations, and a webhook for sending leads to any custom system.
API and custom field mapping
A two-way API, callbacks, and field-level mapping to any CRM, listed on Enterprise.
Lead email notifications
An instant email when a visitor submits a form, so a small team can follow up without an integration.
24/7 phone, chat, and email support
Advertised by the vendor, with a dedicated onboarding and success manager on Business and a named account manager on Enterprise.

Use cases

4 documented

Owner of a single Shopify or WooCommerce store

Cart abandonment is high, the store has no popup tool, and the owner wants a discount offer shown to people about to leave without paying OptinMonster or Wisepops prices.

Business at $39.99 a month billed annually unlocks exit intent, the spin-to-win wheel, and coupon offers on up to five domains, with 200,000 monthly pageviews, which covers a small store comfortably.

Local service business with a low-traffic website

The site gets a few thousand pageviews a month and the owner wants a simple newsletter or quote-request popup without a subscription.

The free plan covers up to 5,000 monthly pageviews, the templates and AI designer produce something presentable in minutes, and lead notification emails go straight to the owner's inbox.

B2B marketer on HubSpot or Salesforce

Content pages need a gated asset offer, and the leads must land in the CRM with the right fields mapped rather than as a CSV export.

Native HubSpot and Salesforce connections carry leads over on the lower tiers, and if field-level mapping and A/B testing are required, the Enterprise tier from $839.88 a year adds both.

Company already on other ProProfs products

The team runs ProProfs Chat or Qualaroo and would rather add popups from the same vendor than onboard another one.

Picreel sits inside ProProfs' Customer Growth Suite with BIGContacts CRM, help desk, knowledge base, and live chat, from $499 a month for the bundle, or can be bought on its own.

Pricing

from Free up to 5,000 monthly pageviews; paid plans from $9.99 per month billed annually ($119.88 a year) or $19.99 month to month

Tiered subscription metered by monthly pageviews and number of domains, with features gated by tier. Annual billing roughly halves the monthly rate on the two lower paid tiers; Enterprise is annual only. A permanent free plan covers up to 5,000 monthly pageviews.

  • Up to 5,000 pageviews per month
  • Unlimited campaigns and popups
  • Lead capture forms and design customization
  • No credit card required

  • 200,000 pageviews per month on up to 5 domains
  • Exit-intent trigger, spin-to-win wheel, timer overlay, coupon offers
  • Geolocation targeting, custom variables, multilingual popups
  • Unlimited users, branding and logo, dedicated onboarding manager

Marked most popular, and the realistic entry point for anyone buying a popup tool for exit intent.

EnterpriseFrom $69.99
per month, annual only ($839.88 billed annually)
  • Unlimited pageviews and domains
  • A/B testing, custom CSS, custom CRM field mapping
  • API, callbacks, and webhooks
  • Named account manager, remote training, enterprise concierge support

Sold through a Contact Us button despite the published starting price. Unlimited email sending to captured leads is listed but marked "Coming Soon".

Add-ons

  • White label package ($300 per year, or $30 per month): Removes the "Powered By" links from popups.
  • Customer Growth Suite (From $499 per month): Picreel bundled with ProProfs' BIGContacts CRM, help desk, knowledge base, and live chat.

Billing notes

  • The meter is pageviews, and the pricing page defines a pageview as every page load or reload, so a busy site with low conversion intent burns allowance quickly.
  • Annual billing is the headline: Essentials is $9.99 a month annually against $19.99 monthly, and Business is $39.99 against $59.99. The page advertises savings of up to 50 percent.
  • Enterprise is annual only, starting at $839.88 a year, and is sold through a contact form even though a starting price is published.
  • Each domain and subdomain counts as a separate domain against the tier limit (one on Essentials, five on Business).
  • A 30-day money-back guarantee applies, framed by the vendor as a guarantee of more leads or sales from existing traffic.
  • The pricing page's opening claim that the free account includes all premium features conflicts with the per-tier feature lists; budget from the tier lists.

Value assessment: At the entry level Picreel is among the cheapest paid popup tools in the category: $119.88 a year buys 50,000 pageviews, unlimited popups, a large template library, and the AI designer, which is less than most rivals charge for a smaller allowance. The value holds only if Essentials actually meets the need, and for most buyers it will not, because exit intent is listed from Business and A/B testing from Enterprise. The honest comparison is therefore Business at $479.88 a year for 200,000 pageviews and five domains, which is still competitive with OptinMonster and Poptin at similar volume, and Enterprise at $839.88 a year for split testing, which is where Poptin's free-tier A/B testing and OptiMonk's all-features-on-every-plan model make Picreel look expensive. Buy it for the price of the middle tier and the phone support, not for testing.

Strengths & limitations

Strengths

  • Low entry price on annual billing: $9.99 a month for 50,000 pageviews is cheaper than most of the category at that volume.
  • A large template library (100-plus) and 15-plus overlay formats, including spin-to-win, timer overlays, sidebars, video popups, and exit surveys.
  • The AI tools cover the tasks a non-designer struggles with: generating a first draft, matching brand colors and fonts from a URL, and editing by instruction.
  • Support coverage the vendor advertises as 24/7 across phone, chat, and email, with a dedicated onboarding manager on the Business tier, which is rare at this price.
  • Long native integration list across email platforms and CRMs, including enterprise systems such as Marketo, Oracle Eloqua, and Salesforce, plus Zapier and webhooks.
  • Backed by ProProfs, an established software company with a public trust page, published data center locations, and a live uptime report.

Limitations

  • Exit intent, the category's most used trigger, is listed only from the Business tier, and A/B testing only on Enterprise.
  • The pricing page contradicts itself, describing the free plan as having all premium features while gating them by tier further down.
  • Security claims are about the hosting providers (AWS and IBM hold SOC 2 Type 2 reports) rather than an audit of Picreel or ProProfs itself.
  • The product is one of many in the ProProfs catalog, and there is little independent documentation, changelog, or roadmap specific to Picreel.
  • Popups only: no built-in email sending (Enterprise email sends are marked "Coming Soon"), no SMS, and no contact database beyond the leads list.
  • Pageview metering counts every page load and reload, which is harsher than a unique-visitor meter for content sites.
  • Customer figures on the site vary by page, from "1,000+ delighted customers" on pricing to "trusted by 1,000+ brands" on the homepage, and conversion claims such as a 15 to 300 percent lift are the vendor's own.

Head-to-head comparisons

4 alternatives

Picreel vs OptinMonster

from $7 per month billed annually ($84 for the first year, then $210 per year at list price)

Both gate features by tier, so the comparison comes down to what each tier unlocks. OptinMonster has the deeper rules engine, revenue attribution, and the WordPress-native plugin, and its introductory annual price is lower at the bottom, though it renews at list price. Picreel charges less at the middle of the range for a larger pageview allowance and adds phone support, but puts A/B testing on its annual-only Enterprise tier. Choose OptinMonster for campaign depth and WordPress; choose Picreel for a cheap, supported popup tool you do not plan to split-test.

Full Picreel vs OptinMonster comparison

Picreel vs Poptin

from Free forever for 1,000 monthly visitors on one domain; paid Poptins plans from $25 per month billed annually

Poptin gives every feature, including exit intent and A/B testing, to every plan down to the free one, and charges only for visitors and domains. Picreel's entry tier is cheaper on annual billing, but reaching exit intent means Business at $39.99 a month and reaching A/B testing means Enterprise from $69.99. For almost any buyer who wants to test offers, Poptin is the better value; Picreel wins only on the size of its template library, its AI designer, and phone support.

Full Picreel vs Poptin comparison

Picreel vs Hello Bar

from Free (about 5,000 lifetime popup views); paid plans from $29 per month

Hello Bar is the simpler, narrower tool, built around the top bar and a small set of formats, with a free plan capped at roughly 5,000 lifetime popup views and paid plans from $29 a month. Picreel's free plan resets monthly, its paid entry is cheaper on annual billing, and it offers far more formats and templates. Hello Bar is the easier tool to live with; Picreel is the more capable one per dollar.

Full Picreel vs Hello Bar comparison

Picreel vs Getsitecontrol

from Free (10,000 monthly widget views); Pro from $19 per month

Getsitecontrol gives a free plan of 10,000 monthly widget views, pro plans from $19 a month, surveys and feedback widgets alongside popups, and its own email sending layer. Picreel has more templates, gamified formats, AI design tools, and live phone support, but no email sending and a smaller free allowance. Choose Getsitecontrol if you want capture and follow-up email in one bill; choose Picreel if you want a popup-only tool with human support behind it.

Pairs well with

7 categories

Picreel is a lead capture tool, and a team running it still has 7 neighbouring categories to staff. The pick in each is Lovable for landing page builders, beehiiv for email service providers, Bento for marketing automation, Microsoft Clarity for CRO & experimentation, Attio for sales CRM, Textdrip for SMS marketing and HockeyStack for GTM analytics, each the leading tool in that category on published criteria.

  1. Because
Picreel is built for lead capture, not landing pages. Lovable adds SSO at the $50 Business tier.
    Benefit
A campaign page ships the same afternoon without waiting on an engineer.
  2. Because
Picreel sends buyers elsewhere for the popup vendor to send the follow-up email. beehiiv adds monetization depth no ESP rival.
    Benefit
An opt-in audience is owned rather than rented, and reaching it costs nothing per send.
  3. Because
Picreel is built for lead capture, not automation. Bento adds unmatched pricing honesty.
    Benefit
Follow-up fires off behaviour rather than a calendar, so nobody is chased at the wrong moment.
  4. Because
Picreel lists customer figures on the site vary by page among its limits. Microsoft Clarity adds copilot summaries and chat lower the skill floor considerably.
    Benefit
Page changes get tested rather than argued about, and the winner is measured.
  5. AttioSales CRM · Momentum
    Because
Picreel is built for lead capture, not CRM. Attio adds data model flexibility.
    Benefit
Every conversation ends up on a record, so a rep leaving does not take the pipeline with them.
  6. Because
Picreel lists the pricing page contradicts itself among its limits. Textdrip adds DNC checking and landline filtering.
    Benefit
The urgent message gets read within minutes, on the one channel almost nobody ignores.
  7. Because
Picreel is built for lead capture, not analytics. HockeyStack adds cookieless tracking with EU data storage and a SOC 2 Type II.
    Benefit
Spend gets attributed to revenue, so the channel that works is the one that gets funded.

Pairings follow the methodology: the leading tool in each complementary category, chosen on published criteria. Placement cannot be purchased.

Implementation & onboarding

Setup time
Under an hour for a first campaign. Paste the snippet or deploy it through Google Tag Manager, pick a template or let the AI designer build one, set a trigger, and connect an email tool. Business customers get a dedicated onboarding manager.
Learning curve
Low. The editor and templates are conventional, the AI editor removes most settings-panel work, and the targeting options are standard. The real learning cost is understanding which features your tier includes.
Onboarding
Self-serve on the free plan, Essentials, and Business, with a 15-day trial and no credit card. Business adds a dedicated onboarding and success manager, and Enterprise adds remote training and a named account manager. Demos can be scheduled from the site.
Migration notes
There is no importer for another vendor's popups, so campaigns are rebuilt, though the AI designer and brand customizer shorten that work. Captured leads live in your connected email platform or CRM, so moving out means disconnecting the integration and removing the snippet. Remove the old vendor's script before going live to avoid two overlays firing on the same visitor.

Security notes
ProProfs describes a web application firewall, Cloudflare CDN protections, DDoS mitigation, periodic vulnerability scanning, TLS encryption in transit, daily local and remote backups, and a public uptime report. It states that its hosting providers hold SOC 2 Type 2 reports; it does not claim a SOC 2 report of its own on the trust page.

Frequently asked questions

12 questions

What is Picreel?

Picreel is a popup and overlay builder owned by ProProfs. It shows lightboxes, nanobars, sidebars, spin-to-win wheels, timer overlays, and exit surveys to website visitors based on exit intent, scroll, time, clicks, and targeting rules, and sends captured leads to an email platform, CRM, Zapier, or webhook.

How much does Picreel cost?

There is a free plan up to 5,000 monthly pageviews. Essentials is $9.99 per month billed annually ($119.88) or $19.99 monthly for 50,000 pageviews on one domain. Business is $39.99 per month billed annually ($479.88) or $59.99 monthly for 200,000 pageviews on five domains. Enterprise starts at $69.99 per month on annual billing only ($839.88) with unlimited pageviews and domains.

Does Picreel have a free plan or free trial?

Both. The free plan is permanent and covers up to 5,000 pageviews a month, and paid plans have a 15-day free trial with no credit card required. There is also a 30-day money-back guarantee on purchases.

Is exit intent included on every Picreel plan?

Not according to the published tier lists. The exit-intent trigger appears in the Business tier's feature list, not in Essentials, even though the pricing page opens by saying the free account has all premium features. If exit intent is the reason you are buying, budget for Business at $39.99 a month billed annually and confirm during the trial.

Does Picreel support A/B testing?

Yes, but the published plan lists place A/B testing on the Enterprise tier, which is annual-only from $839.88 a year. Several competitors, including Poptin and OptiMonk, include split testing on their free plans, which is the most important price difference to know about.

How does Picreel count pageviews?

Every time a page on your site loads or reloads, it counts as a pageview against the monthly allowance. That makes the meter stricter than a unique-visitor count, so a site with many pages per session uses its allowance faster.

Who owns Picreel?

ProProfs, which acquired it in January 2021. Picreel was founded in 2013 by Alex Bashinsky and was owned by Webfolio Management, a Reno, Nevada private equity firm, from 2016 until the ProProfs acquisition.

What does Picreel integrate with?

Natively with Mailchimp, ActiveCampaign, AWeber, Constant Contact, GetResponse, Klaviyo, HubSpot, Salesforce, Marketo, Oracle Eloqua, Keap, Ontraport, and others, with Shopify, WordPress, BigCommerce, Magento, and most website builders, and with Slack for lead alerts. Zapier and webhooks cover the rest, which is how the vendor reaches its 700-plus integration figure.

Is Picreel secure and GDPR compliant?

ProProfs states GDPR and CCPA compliance, hosts data in Dallas and Northern Virginia with AWS and IBM, encrypts data in transit with TLS, and runs a web application firewall and daily backups. Its trust page says the hosting providers hold SOC 2 Type 2 reports rather than claiming one for ProProfs itself, so ask for current documentation if your procurement requires it.

What should I pair Picreel with?

Picreel is a lead capture tool, and a team running it still has 7 neighbouring categories to staff. The pick in each is Lovable for landing page builders, beehiiv for email service providers, Bento for marketing automation, Microsoft Clarity for CRO & experimentation, Attio for sales CRM, Textdrip for SMS marketing and HockeyStack for GTM analytics, each the leading tool in that category on published criteria.

What do I pair with Picreel for Landing Page Builders?

Lovable. Picreel is built for lead capture, not landing pages. Lovable adds SSO at the $50 Business tier.

Is Picreel enough on its own?

For lead capture, yes. Picreel does not cover email service providers, marketing automation and CRO & experimentation, and its own profile says so; beehiiv, Bento and Microsoft Clarity are the tools that fill those gaps.

Editorial verdict

Picreel is a cheap, conventional popup tool with a large template library, a useful set of new AI helpers, and the kind of phone support that is unusual at this price, all backed by ProProfs rather than a small independent team. The entry price is misleading, though. Essentials at $9.99 a month billed annually is real value for a basic popup, but the tier lists put exit intent on Business and A/B testing on an annual-only Enterprise plan, which is backwards compared with Poptin and OptiMonk, both of which include testing on their free plans. Buy Picreel at the Business tier if you want a supported, reasonably priced exit-intent and coupon tool for a handful of sites and you are not going to run split tests. If testing offers is how you plan to improve conversion, a competitor gives you that for less.
