Rank Math
The WordPress SEO plugin with a free tier most sites never outgrow
Rank Math is an SEO plugin for WordPress that handles on-page optimisation, schema markup, XML sitemaps, redirections, 404 monitoring and Google Search Console data from inside the WordPress dashboard. The core plugin is free and runs on more than four million sites; paid plans start at $7.99 a month billed annually ($95.88 for the first year, renewing at $107.88) and add keyword rank tracking, advanced schema, WooCommerce and local SEO features.
Overview
Rank Math is where a small business running WordPress usually does its SEO, because it puts the work inside the editor where pages are written. It was released as a free plugin in 2019, grew faster than any WordPress SEO plugin before it, and passed four million active installations on WordPress.org with a 4.8 rating from more than 7,500 reviews. In 2023 it was acquired by group.one, the Swedish group behind one.com hosting and the WP Rocket performance plugin. Its co-founders, Bhanu Ahluwalia, Nimit Kashyap and Suraj Vibhute, still run it with a remote team the company puts at 27 or more, from Gurugram in India.
The free plugin is unusually complete. It analyses each post against up to five focus keywords, writes titles, meta descriptions and Open Graph data, generates XML sitemaps, manages redirects, logs 404 errors, adds schema markup from a generator with a long list of types, and pulls Google Search Console data into the dashboard. That covers what most small sites need from an SEO plugin, which is why many never pay.
The paid plans add what a growing site or an agency notices next. PRO tracks 500 keywords inside WordPress, supports more than 840 schema types, and adds advanced Google Analytics 4 data, WooCommerce product SEO, local SEO with multiple locations, image SEO, and news and video sitemaps. Business and Agency raise keyword tracking to 10,000 and 50,000 and licence the plugin for 100 and 500 client sites. Rank Math AI, the content and writing assistant, is a separate subscription with a 15-day trial bundled into each paid plan.
Pricing is low and plainly published: PRO is $7.99 a month billed annually, Business $24.99 and Agency $54.99, with renewals at $107.88, $335.88 and $779.88 a year. Every purchase carries a 30-day no-questions refund for new customers. The plugin is not a research tool, though: it shows how your own pages perform and how they are built, and it does not tell you what competitors rank for or how hard a keyword is to win.
Best for
Small businesses, bloggers, WooCommerce shops and agencies running WordPress sites who want on-page SEO, schema, sitemaps and redirects handled inside WordPress, mostly for free.
Not the right fit for
- Sites not built on WordPress; Rank Math is a WordPress plugin and nothing else.
- Anyone who needs keyword or competitor research; the plugin optimises your own pages and does not show what others rank for or how hard a keyword is.
- Teams that need a full technical crawl of a large site; Rank Math checks pages it knows about, while a crawler such as Screaming Frog or Sitebulb finds what WordPress does not.
- Agencies that need the plugin itself white-labelled; the vendor states it does not offer a white-label option beyond email reports.
- Sites that need serious rank tracking volume on the cheapest plan; PRO tracks 500 keywords, and tracking runs from your WordPress install rather than a dedicated service.
How it works
- 1
You install the plugin from the WordPress dashboard and run a setup wizard that imports settings from Yoast SEO, All in One SEO or others, connects Google Search Console, and switches modules on or off.
- 2
While you edit a post, a sidebar panel scores the page against its focus keywords and lists fixes: title length, keyword placement, internal links, image alt text and readability. Titles, descriptions and social previews are edited in the same panel.
- 3
Site-wide modules run in the background: XML sitemaps update as content changes, the redirection manager and 404 monitor catch broken URLs, and schema markup is added per post type or per page from the schema generator.
- 4
On paid plans the Analytics module stores Search Console and Google Analytics 4 data and tracked keyword positions inside WordPress, so performance sits next to the content it describes.
Feature breakdown
18 features in 4 modulesOn-page optimisation
The core of the plugin, free on every site.- Content analysis per post
- Scores each post against up to five focus keywords by default, with a checklist of fixes covering titles, headings, keyword placement, links and readability.
- Titles, meta and social previews
- Edits titles, meta descriptions and Open Graph and X card data per page, with templates for post types and archives.
- Internal link suggestions
- Suggests related posts to link while you write, which is the cheapest ranking improvement most small sites leave undone.
- Image SEO
- Adds missing alt text and titles automatically; the advanced image module on paid plans adds rules by file and post.
- Import from other SEO plugins
- The setup wizard imports settings and metadata from Yoast SEO, All in One SEO and others, so switching does not lose titles or redirects.
Schema markup
The strongest free schema support of any WordPress SEO plugin.- Schema generator
- Free sites get a generator with built-in types for articles, products, recipes, events, FAQs, how-tos and more.
- 840-plus schema types on paid plans
- PRO and above support the full schema.org vocabulary, custom schema built from templates, and importing schema from another page.
- WooCommerce product schema
- Product, price, availability and review markup for WooCommerce shops, part of the paid WooCommerce SEO module.
- Local SEO with multiple locations
- Local business schema and location pages for businesses with more than one address, on paid plans.
Technical site management
The housekeeping a small site otherwise needs three plugins for.- XML sitemaps
- Generated and updated automatically, with Google News and video sitemaps on paid plans.
- Redirection manager
- Creates and manages 301, 302 and other redirects in bulk, including automatic redirects when a post's URL changes.
- 404 monitor
- Logs requests for missing pages so broken links and old URLs can be redirected before they cost traffic.
- Robots.txt and .htaccess editing
- Edits crawl directives from inside WordPress, with per-page noindex and nofollow controls.
Analytics, tracking and plans
What the paid plans add.- Search Console in the dashboard
- Free sites see Search Console data inside WordPress; free data refreshes every three days and is kept for 90 days.
- Keyword rank tracking
- 500 tracked keywords on PRO, 10,000 on Business and 50,000 on Agency, with daily data fetches and unlimited retention on the top plan.
- Google Analytics 4 integration
- Paid plans bring GA4 traffic data next to Search Console data and rank positions, per post.
- Client management
- Business and Agency licence the plugin for 100 and 500 client sites, with white-labelled email reports.
- Rank Math AI trial
- Each paid plan includes a 15-day trial of the separately sold AI writing assistant: Starter with PRO, Creator with Business, Expert with Agency.
Use cases
4 documentedLocal service business on WordPress
A plumber's site needs proper titles, local business schema and a sitemap, and nobody on staff knows what schema is.
The free plugin and its setup wizard handle titles, sitemaps and basic schema in an afternoon; PRO at $7.99 a month adds multi-location local SEO if the business has more than one address.
WooCommerce shop owner
Product pages are not showing price and availability in search results, and old product URLs return 404 errors.
PRO adds WooCommerce product schema, while the redirection manager and 404 monitor route old URLs to live products.
Blogger switching from Yoast
Wants more schema and internal linking help without paying for Yoast Premium on every site.
The importer carries titles, descriptions and redirects across, and the free plan covers multiple focus keywords and the schema generator.
Small agency managing client WordPress sites
Thirty client sites each need SEO settings, rank tracking and a monthly emailed report.
Business at $24.99 a month licenses 100 client sites and tracks 10,000 keywords, which costs less than one seat on most SEO suites.
Pricing
from Free, then $7.99 per month billed annually (PRO)Free plugin plus three paid plans billed annually, priced by the number of sites and tracked keywords. The same numbers are charged in US dollars and euros. Rank Math AI is a separate subscription.

Add-ons
- Rank Math AI (From $71.88 a year (Starter)): AI writing assistant with competitor research, long-form article generation and image alt text, sold on Starter, Creator and Expert plans with monthly usage limits.
Billing notes
- Paid plans are billed annually. The advertised monthly rates are first-year prices; renewals are $107.88, $335.88 and $779.88 a year, about 12 to 18 percent more.
- Every new purchase carries a 30-day no-questions refund. It does not apply to renewals.
- PRO covers unlimited personal sites but no client sites, so a freelancer working on client sites needs Business from the start.
- The same figures are charged in US dollars and euros, so a euro buyer pays slightly more in real terms.
- Rank Math AI is a separate subscription; the paid plans include only a 15-day trial of it.
Value assessment: Rank Math is the best value in WordPress SEO and one of the best in this whole category, mainly because the free plugin is complete enough that most small sites never pay. PRO at $7.99 a month adds rank tracking, full schema and WooCommerce and local SEO for less than a single month of most SEO suites. The catch is scope rather than price: it optimises and monitors your own WordPress pages and does no keyword or competitor research, so it pairs with a research tool rather than replacing one. Watch the renewal step-up and the personal-site restriction on PRO.

Strengths & limitations
Strengths
- A free plugin complete enough for most small sites, with more than four million installs and a 4.8 rating from over 7,500 reviews.
- The strongest schema support of any WordPress SEO plugin, with a free generator and more than 840 types on paid plans.
- Redirections, a 404 monitor and sitemaps built in, replacing several separate plugins.
- Paid plans from $7.99 a month with 500 to 50,000 tracked keywords inside WordPress.
- A setup wizard that imports from Yoast SEO and others, making switching low-risk.
- A 30-day no-questions refund on new purchases.
Limitations
- WordPress only.
- No keyword research, competitor analysis or backlink data, so it does not replace a research tool.
- Renewals cost 12 to 18 percent more than the first-year price.
- PRO excludes client sites, so freelancers need the $24.99 Business plan.
- The plugin itself cannot be white-labelled, only its email reports.
- Page-level checks are not a crawl; technical problems outside what WordPress knows about need a dedicated crawler.

A small site owner on a budget can pair Ubersuggest for research with free Rank Math for execution and cover most of the job.
Full Rank Math vs Ubersuggest comparisonRank Math vs Frase
from $39 per month (Starter, billed yearly; $49 monthly)Frase researches and drafts content and scores it for search and AI answers, from $39 a month annually, and can publish into WordPress. Frequently asked questions
12 questionsWhat is Rank Math?
Rank Math is a WordPress SEO plugin that handles on-page optimisation, titles and meta descriptions, schema markup, XML sitemaps, redirects, 404 monitoring and Google Search Console data inside WordPress. The core plugin is free; paid plans add rank tracking and advanced features.
How much does Rank Math cost?
The plugin is free. PRO is $7.99 a month billed annually ($95.88 for the first year) and renews at $107.88 a year. Business is $24.99 a month ($299.88) and renews at $335.88; Agency is $54.99 a month ($659.88) and renews at $779.88. New purchases have a 30-day refund.
Is the free version of Rank Math enough?
For most small sites, yes. It covers on-page analysis with up to five focus keywords, titles and meta, a schema generator, sitemaps, redirections, a 404 monitor and Search Console data. Pay when you need rank tracking, WooCommerce or local schema, or client sites.
Can I use Rank Math PRO on client sites?
No. PRO covers unlimited personal websites only. Business covers 100 client and personal sites and Agency covers 500.
Does Rank Math do keyword research?
Not in the sense SEO suites do. It suggests focus keywords from Google autocomplete and tracks positions on paid plans, but it does not show search volumes at scale, keyword difficulty or what competitors rank for. Pair it with a research tool such as Mangools or Ubersuggest.
Is Rank Math better than Yoast SEO?
On free features, usually yes: multiple focus keywords, a schema generator, redirections and a 404 monitor are free in Rank Math and paid in Yoast. Yoast has the longer track record and a strong readability analysis. The importer makes switching low-risk.
Does Rank Math work with WooCommerce?
Yes. The free plugin handles WooCommerce titles and sitemaps, and paid plans add product schema with price, availability and reviews, plus other WooCommerce SEO settings.
Who owns Rank Math?
group.one, the Swedish group that also owns one.com and WP Rocket, acquired Rank Math in 2023. Its co-founders, Bhanu Ahluwalia, Nimit Kashyap and Suraj Vibhute, continue to run it from Gurugram, India.
Is Rank Math AI included?
No. Rank Math AI is a separate subscription from $71.88 a year. Each paid plugin plan includes a 15-day trial of one AI plan: Starter with PRO, Creator with Business and Expert with Agency.
What should I pair Rank Math with?
Rank Math is a SEO tool, and a team running it still has 7 neighbouring categories to staff. The pick in each is Wordtune for AI writing & content generation, Durable for landing page builders, Localo for local SEO & listings, Fathom Analytics for GTM analytics, Buffer for social media management, Google Forms for forms & surveys and Hello Bar for lead capture & popups, each the leading tool in that category on published criteria.
What do I pair with Rank Math for AI Writing & Content Generation?
Wordtune. Rank Math is built for SEO, not AI writing. Wordtune adds built by AI21 Labs.
Is Rank Math enough on its own?
For SEO, yes. Rank Math does not cover landing page builders, local SEO & listings and GTM analytics, and its own profile says so; Durable, Localo and Fathom Analytics are the tools that fill those gaps.
Editorial verdict
Rank Math is the SEO plugin a WordPress site should start with, and most small sites will never need to pay for it. The free version does on-page analysis, schema, sitemaps, redirects and 404 monitoring better than most paid alternatives, and PRO at $7.99 a month adds rank tracking, full schema and WooCommerce and local SEO for very little. Know what it is not: it does no keyword or competitor research and it is not a crawler, so it is the place you act on SEO decisions rather than where you make them. Budget for the renewal step-up, and buy Business rather than PRO if the sites belong to clients.
