Awario compared with Mention

Mention used to be the self-serve monitoring tool small teams chose; since mid 2025 it sells a single demo-led Company plan from $599 a month on an annual contract, bundled with Agorapulse's social tools. Awario now occupies the position Mention left: published prices, a card checkout, and a Starter plan at $29 a month. Mention still wins for a team that wants listening and social publishing from one vendor with a sales relationship. For monitoring alone, Awario is the far cheaper and simpler purchase.

Mention compared with Awario

Awario now sells what Mention used to: self-serve monitoring with published prices, from $29 a month billed annually, where Mention has moved to a single demo-led Company plan from $599 a month on an annual contract. Mention's case is listening plus Agorapulse social publishing under one vendor relationship. A team that only needs monitoring will find Awario far cheaper and quicker to buy.

Choose Awario if

Small businesses, solo PR consultants, and lean marketing teams that want brand, competitor, and news monitoring with sentiment and share of voice on a self-serve budget, and that care more about news, blog, forum, Reddit, and X coverage than about Instagram, TikTok, or LinkedIn.

Choose Mention if

Mid-market and larger comms, PR, and brand teams that need broad multi-source listening with Boolean precision, competitor share of voice, and white-labelled reporting, and that can commit to an annual contract bought through a sales conversation.

Setup timeA first alert runs within minutes of signing up. Getting a clean feed takes longer: expect two or three sessions in the first week adding excluded keywords and blacklisted sites, and budget time to connect social accounts if you want in-app replies and more X results.A first alert takes minutes, and results begin arriving immediately. Getting a feed that is actually worth reading takes longer: expect a week or two of tuning Boolean exclusions, language and country scoping, and source filters before the noise ratio settles. Onboarding is scheduled with the account manager rather than self-directed.
Learning curveLow for the feed and dashboards, moderate for Boolean queries. The help center includes language and country codes and sample queries, and most brands with a distinctive name never need Boolean mode. The judgment that takes practice is reading reach and sentiment as trends rather than as precise numbers.Low for reading a feed, moderate for writing good queries. The 2,000 character advanced alert is powerful and unforgiving; a poorly written one either floods the account and burns mention quota or silently misses the coverage that mattered. Plan for someone to own query maintenance rather than treating alerts as set and forget.

Strengths and limitations

Awario

Strengths

  • The lowest published entry price among the monitoring tools in this category, at $29 a month billed annually, with a card checkout and no sales call on any listed plan.
  • Boolean search, sentiment analysis, and unlimited keywords per topic are on every plan rather than reserved for upper tiers.
  • Awario Leads turns the same crawl into a prospecting feed of recommendation requests and competitor complaints, a feature most monitoring tools do not offer at any price.
  • In-app replies, likes, shares, and follows from several connected accounts per network let a small team act on a mention without switching tools.

Limitations

  • Instagram and Facebook coverage is narrow because Meta's API only exposes connected business pages and hashtags used by business and creator accounts; personal accounts, groups, and private content are out of reach.
  • TikTok and LinkedIn are not listed among monitored sources, a real gap for consumer and B2B brands respectively.
  • CSV export, PDF reports, and report sharing start on Pro, so the $29 Starter plan keeps all data inside the app.
  • White-label reports, the API, Zapier, and an account manager are Enterprise-only, which pushes agencies to $249 a month.

Mention

Strengths

  • Broad source coverage in one index: social platforms, news, blogs, forums, and more than seventy-five review sites, rather than social alone.
  • Advanced Boolean alerts with a 2,000 character query allowance, which is the difference between a signal feed and a noise feed for ambiguous brand names.
  • Unlimited users on the Company plan, so read access can be given to support, legal, and executives without a per-seat calculation.
  • White-label scheduled reporting that makes listening a saleable agency deliverable rather than an internal cost.

Limitations

  • The self-serve tiers are gone. Solo, Pro, and Pro Plus were discontinued for new customers in July 2025, so a small business cannot buy Mention at its historic price point regardless of what third-party pricing pages still say.
  • The only published route to purchase is a demo request; there is no public signup and no clearly documented open trial, which makes cheap evaluation impossible.
  • Historical data is not included at any tier. A new alert starts collecting from creation, and backfilling up to two years is a separate paid add-on.
  • API access is also an add-on rather than a plan feature, which raises the real cost of any integration project above the headline price.

On capability per dollar Awario is the strongest self-serve monitoring offer in this category. Starter at $29 a month on annual billing includes Boolean search, sentiment, unlimited keywords per topic, and 30,000 mentions, fifteen times the 2,000 mentions Brand24 includes at its own entry price of $199. The catches are where the tiers draw their lines: a solo buyer on Starter cannot export anything or produce a PDF, a consultant on Pro at $89 still hands clients Awario-branded reports, and API access and Zapier only arrive at $249. The other cost is coverage. If your audience talks on news sites, blogs, forums, Reddit, and X, the price is hard to argue with; if it talks on Instagram, TikTok, or LinkedIn, the cheapness buys a feed that misses the conversation.

As a listening engine at the $600 to $1,500 a month level, Mention is competitive: broad source coverage, real Boolean control, unlimited seats, and reporting an agency can put a client logo on. The problem is the shape of the offer rather than the number. A tool that built its reputation on a $49 entry point now requires a demo, an annual commitment, and two paid add-ons before it does what a buyer assumes it already does. For a small business that reads about Mention in a listicle and expects a card-and-go signup, the value question does not really arise, because that route no longer exists. For a mid-market comms team already budgeting five figures a year for monitoring, it is a reasonable buy that undercuts the traditional media intelligence vendors by a wide margin.

Editorial verdict on each

Awario

Awario is the monitoring tool to buy when the budget is small and the web is where your brand gets discussed. At $29 a month on annual billing it delivers Boolean search, sentiment, unlimited keywords per topic, and 30,000 mentions from news, blogs, forums, Reddit, X, and YouTube, and it adds two things most rivals lack at any price: a lead feed built from competitor complaints and recommendation requests, and in-app replies from your own accounts. The tier lines are where the value thins out. Starter keeps every number inside the app, Pro is where export and PDF reports begin, and anything an agency would call client-ready (white-label, API, Zapier) waits at $249. Coverage is the harder limit: Instagram and Facebook are constrained by Meta, TikTok and LinkedIn are absent, and there is no print or broadcast. The company is also unusually quiet about itself. Run the free week on your real brand name; if the feed is clean and your audience lives on the open web, it is the best monitoring value in the category.

Mention

Mention still does the thing it became known for, and does it well: a broad, fast index across social, news, forums, and review sites, with Boolean control good enough to make an ambiguous brand name workable and reporting polished enough to bill a client for. What changed is who is allowed to buy it. The self-serve tiers that made Mention a default recommendation for small businesses were retired in July 2025, publishing and replying were removed in January 2026, and the only published route now is a demo leading to an annual Company contract from $599 a month with historical data and API access priced on top. For a mid-market comms team that would otherwise be quoted five figures by a traditional media intelligence vendor, that is a fair deal and worth a bake-off against Agility PR. For the small business this directory is written for, Mention is now a tool to know about rather than one to buy, and Brand24 or a monitoring module inside a platform you already pay for will get you further for the money.
